[...] in the past, and with hindsight we should be in a position to appreciate that making a false moral equivalence -- as many China "apologists" are making today -- could be detrimental to any and all who cherish the values of freedom and liberty.
None of this, of course, signifies that we should ignore the deficiencies, some of them rather grave, in our own system, nor does our response to this challenge imply that "anything goes." We mustn't, in all this, compromise our humanity. But act we must.
