It's hard to properly explain this but the jingoistic language around COVID-19 in the UK is really rubbing me the wrong way.
A) Martyring medical professionals means we ignore whether or not these deaths are preventable or not. Also buys into the cultural myth of the NHS rather than the practical reality.
B) Using the commendable work of POCs/immigrants who risk their lives to help people as a 'gotcha' for racism still upholds the 'good immigrant' narrative and will not change things in the long term (which you can see with resurgences of racism post WW1, post WW2, w/Windrush etc)
Which isn't to say that we shouldn't allow the image of the medical professionals involved to be whitewashed, but we still shouldn't fall into these narratives which ultimately only helps Britain feel better about itself without meaningfully changing
