This rush to online K-12 is going to heighten inequity and is totally not necessary. Learning is not linear. Just cancel the school year. Do not demand that we home school all our kids. My latest @CNNOpinion.

Some sources: Online education done poorly (and all of this instant rush is being done poorly through no fault of the teacher) is an inequality multiplier. From @educationweek. /2 https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2020/03/26/the-scramble-to-move-americas-schools-online.html">https://www.edweek.org/ew/articl...
"Learning is going to depend on a fragile chain over highly stressed parents and other caregivers and teachers (many of whom are caring for their own kids) creating the conditions in which learning is possible. The children are stressed out, too." /3
Rural kids in Illinois do not have broadband, @jodiscohen and @jsmithrichards found in a @ProPublicaIL / @chicagotribune collaboration. This cannot be fixed in a couple of hectic weeks in March. It has not been fixed. /4
We /are/ going to need resilient remote learning systems. @edyong209 wrote about a scenario in which Covid-19 recurs and prompts well-organized local shutdowns and quarantines. We need to build resilient systems for that. Again, not doable this spring /5 https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/how-will-coronavirus-end/608719/">https://www.theatlantic.com/health/ar...
"Let& #39;s just call the school year off, hunker down, try to keep our families intact, and care for the sick. Most learning is not linear. All of this can be made up, perhaps by starting next year early if weather and the virus permits."
