let’s talk about the presale for IX tickets: it literally broke records. despite a chunk of this fandom claiming that they and many others would boycott it, it still broke the record set by endgame for most tickets sold on the first day of resale by 45%.
FORTY FIVE PERCENT. this means that it didn’t just beat endgame, it beat out every other SW movie, including TFA. what does this show? it shows that the majority of people didn’t actually hate the last jedi so much that it ruined IX for them, like ppl in this fandom love to say.
after the last jedi, people were EXCITED for this film, so much so that the first day ticket sales for the movie literally smashed the record.
now let’s look at the box office. $1.058B. that’s only 2 million more than rogue one, and $263M less than TLJ. IX crawled to the billion dollar mark, taking 24 days to get there, whereas TLJ took only 15.
at it’s peak, TLJ was the ninth highest grossing film of all time. IX never even made the top 30, let alone the top ten.
and what about the critics? they loved TLJ. compare the glowing reviews that TLJ got to the awful reviews of IX.
now let’s look at blu-ray sales. TLJ was the 2nd top selling release of 2018, selling 3M units, only barely falling behind IW, with 3.1M units sold. if the majority really hated this movie, that never would have happened.
so here’s my question: how could LFL look at this amazing success, and think “we’re going to throw this all away, and make a sequel that not only goes in the completely opposite direction of this, but spits on and ignores it entirely.”? just...how?
