Gather around for story time, friends. I do a lot of talks for audiences of people from big name companies, medium companies, tiny ones. My overall message is about how interactive simulations can be used to make better decisions, test your business continuity plans, etc.
I typically get a lot of good questions, some pushback from people who are like "nah, we write a good handbook and people can just read it," and some anger about how such and such company is totally prepared and doesn't need this "stuff." All expected and nothing makes me cry.
But I have a working memory. I read a lot. And I'm seeing some familiar names pop up right now, who claimed to have it all together, and are now falling apart at truly impressive speeds. I don't take any pleasure at that. I feel like a failure for not persuading them enough.
I don't do what I do to make executives a ton of money. I do it because I know that preparation and testing your plans and have the right mediums for playing out scenarios and such- that's the difference between a company thriving/paying good people and good people losing jobs.
I do what I do at fairly low cost, very quickly, and as effectively as I can so that companies can be prepared and confident and make good decisions. So smart people can do their jobs better, more effectively, and with the right tools. And when it all comes together, I'm thrilled
When companies pass on my services, then end up in a lot of trouble, I truly feel like I failed their workforce, the vendors and customers who rely on them, their partners, and the beneficiaries of their sponsorships. It would be easy to just take pleasure in "I told you so."
So if your company is struggling, and you have the power, find someone you trust to help right your ship before it's too late. Maybe that's me, and hey, great! I'm available to help. Maybe it's not me- still great. But do it for the people who depend on you.
