A Twitter experiment. How can we reimagine museum visiting and curation in a time of lockdown? Many museums have great programmes sharing digital content—but during April let's experiment with other collaborative ways of seeing and thinkng about museums #museumsunlocked THREAD👇
Here's the idea: Our museums may be closed but many of us have our own archives of them: photographs we've taken as visitors, sitting on our iphones, laptops and clouds. Let's share them one museum at a time—"visiting" a different museum together every day #museumsunlocked
THE RULES for #museumsunlocked are simple. Choose between one and four photographs of that day's museum: showing displays, architecture, events, etc. Reply to the thread. Your 280 characters is your museum label. Make sure 16 of those characters are the hashtag. #museumsunlocked
Content-wise this might be favourite objects, exhibits or events—or might comment and reflect on any aspect of the museum, whether positive or critical—making a space for discussion of all aspects of museums: politics, problems, memories, why they matter, & so on #museumsunlocked
OK - Day 1 of #museumsunlocked. 1 April. Let's start at the @Pitt_Rivers, which is where I work. Please share your photos from the Pitt Rivers as replies to this tweet. (photos of our neighbours @morethanadodo also very welcome.) Do include the hashtag #museumsunlocked. GO!
To kick us off, here's one from me: the temporary display of ceremonial wooden paddles looted from Benin City, Nigeria, on display as their current owner Mark Walker (grandson of one of the looting soldiers) seeks to restitute them to the Royal Court of Benin. #museumsunlocked
Please also vote for which museum we should visit on Day 2 of #Museumsunlocked (2 April): shall we"visit" the @V_and_A or the @royalacademy?
It's the @V_and_A for Day 2 of #museumsunlocked - please share your photos of the V&A!
