I think people ought to know how Muslims prepare the bodies of their deceased for burial.
I won't to into minute details, but here's a thread on what we do.
Perhaps after reading this you'd understand why we are so sensitive about the cremation issue. 1/
1. First we wash the body.
Any Muslim adult who has a close relative die, is likely to have been involved in washing. We wash the body with clean warm water and soap.

2. We handle the body with gentleness and care.
When the body has to be moved or turned for washing, 2/
we do so gently so as not to 'hurt' the body.

3. We never expose the body.
At no point is the body fully naked. We keep the private parts covered with a cloth. The cloth isn't fully raised even when those part are being washed. 3/
4. We wrap the body in a white cloth.
We have a special shroud called "kafn" which we wrap the body in. it's not compulsory for it to be white, but it is preferred.

5. The body is perfumed.
We sprinkle "attar" to perfume the body. 4/
6. We perform special prayer.
The body is taken to the burial ground, usually attached to mosque and a special funeral prayer is prayed by the congregation present. The prayer is lead by a family member of the deceased.
5/
7. The body is buried.
Someone actually jumps into the grave when the body is lowered into it so that it can be placed gently on the ground.
6/
However with the Covid19 outbreak, Muslims have been asked not to wash the bodies of the deceased. Though this is an important ritual, we agree that it is best.
It would not be considered a sin (to the family), and the deceased person will be treated as a martyr would be. 7/
I hope now you understand why the idea of cremation is so painful. This is a person's last journey, and we we are compromising on almost all our rituals for the sake of humankind.
Burial is allowed as per WHO guidelines and it is the right of the dead person to receive it.
