So, tomorrow is New Comic Book Day, but there are no new comics! So what are you going to read? I know folks are pushing the idea of "New TO YOU Comic Book Day" which I really dig. The idea of getting folks to read comics they haven't checked out! #NTYCBD
Tomorrow I'll suggest some of my favorite comics other folks are making, but I know plenty of you only follow me for that sweet sweet Batman fix, and have never read my independent work. So let me give you a rundown...
All of these books are out through @boomstudios. You should call your LCS, and see if they can ship them your way, if they pique your interest! If not, you should check out other comic shops offering mail order!
SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN is a horror comic set in a small Wisconsin town where children are being killed. One boy sees the impossible monsters doing the killing, but has no one to turn to until a mysterious monster hunter named Erica Slaughter arrives in town.
THE WOODS is a sci-fi/horror adventure series about a Milwaukee high school suddenly transported into the middle of an alien forest, and is the story of the kids trying to figure out how to survive, and how to get home.
MEMETIC is a standalone apocalypse horror story, which starts with a strange image of a sloth posted online that gives people euphoria when they see it... 12 hours after seeing it, people start screaming, and become the servants of the image. 3 days later, the world has ended.
COGNETIC is the second Horror Apocalypse I created with @ErykDonovan, in which an ancient psychic superorganism starts taking over the minds of everyone in the planet, starting with the Empire State Building. The only being that can stop it is its sibling.
EUGENIC is the third and final entry in the "Apocalyptic Trilogy"... It's the story of the artificial creation of a new race of human, Numans, designed to end prejudice and hate. Every issue jumps forward 200 years to show how poorly that goes.
UFOLOGY is the story of a teenage girl who gets touched on the side of the head by an alien lifeform, giving her the ability to understand and read alien technology, and the teenage boy who wishes more than anything else that he had been given that gift instead.
BACKSTAGERS is my only all-ages series! It tells the story of stage crew kids exploring the magical backstage of their high school theater. It is about friendship, budding romance, and rats with tools coming out of them! It's still scary in parts, but in an age-appropriate way :P
They are virtually all horror comics featuring high schoolers that take place in Wisconsin, but as you can see, I come at that from a number of different angles, and for a number of different age ranges.
SIKTC is the most adult (Rated R), followed closely by the Apocalyptics (Hard PG-13, R-Adjacent), followed by The Woods and Ufology which are more YA-adjacent (PG-13), and Backstagers is firmly Middle Grade (PG).
I'm very proud of all of these comic books! If you've only read my Superhero work and decide to give them a shot, I hope you enjoy them!!
