For the most part, asthma, hypertension, and diabetes are inequalities — differences that are a direct result of racism, poverty, disinvestment, and other structural barriers — not “pre-existing conditions.”

Here’s an excellent article by @uche_blackstock that provides an overview of the barriers to equitable treatment and other inequalities that emerge during the #covid19 pandemic and similar disasters: https://twitter.com/ctdata/status/1245013423504703488?s=21 #healthequity #phealth
Most US cities have a 15-year gap in life expectancy. Neighborhoods that have seen these catastrophically-high premature death rates for decades, due to inequality, racism, & incarceration, are also likely to be impacted by #covid19 at 2-5 times the rate of affluent areas. #nnip
“The USA is fairly unique [globally] in the extent to which its wealthier residents (earning >$100,000 per year) are more likely than more middle-income residents to obtain the critical resources they need to stay healthy.” https://www.ctdatahaven.org/reports/greater-hartford-community-wellbeing-index #healthequity #covid19 #nnip
Data are starting to come in regarding the impact of #covid19 by race/ethnicity. For example, here is a news share from Chicago, a city that is roughly 32% white, 32% Latino, and 29% Black. https://twitter.com/ctulocal1/status/1246999301458362369?s=21 #healthequity
Note that these new #covid19 reports generally are not disaggregated by age and race together. Given that some groups on average are far younger, age-adjustment is crucial if you want to consider how risks of premature mortality differ. https://twitter.com/ctdata/status/1246528468009050115?s=21 #HealthEquity #nnip
In newly-released data from @LADeptHealth, over 70% of recorded #covid19 deaths are among the African-American population; the state is 32% Black https://twitter.com/mr_berman/status/1247292685578383363?s=21 #healthequity #inequality cc @WK_Kellogg_Fdn
New reporting from @WBUR describes a disproportionate impact of #covid19 on Latino adults in New England. https://twitter.com/simonfrios/status/1247253763112517637?s=21 #healthequity #bospoli #healthequityweek
. @nycHealthy has calculated age-adjusted #covid19 death rates by race/ethnicity. Adjusting for age differences-the standard way to measure how health risks differ by place or community-Latinos and Blacks are dying at twice the rate of whites. #phealth #coronavirus #healthequity
Here’s a comparison of NYC’s population & aggregate #covid19 deaths to the risk of dying by race/ethnicity, after adjusting for age. This is the standard way to understand which places or groups have the highest risk of mortality. https://twitter.com/ctdata/status/1247959560557596673?s=21 #nnip #healthequity @RWJF
”Most #Elmhurst residents can’t #StayHome & order takeout. They are the ones delivering the takeout. [E]ssential employees forced to keep going to work with a cough & fever until they can’t breathe...Elmhurst is 71% foreign-born and over 93% POC.”

#HealthEquity isn't just about socioeconomic differences. Black & Latino adults are more likely to experience discrimination, regardless of income. In CT, they are 3-9X more likely to have been unfairly treated by police on multiple occasions over the past 3 years. #covid19 #nnip
These differences were even greater when looking at experiences reported in public places, like parks. Another example from the same 2018 survey, which completed live interviews w/ 16,043 randomly-selected adults throughout CT: https://twitter.com/urbandata/status/1199029308091719682 #covid19 #nnip #healthequity
