The 1901 #census was taken #OTD 119 yrs ago. My grandad, Albert Stephenson (13), was a 'resident' of the ‘Southampton Industrial School Ship’, Hull. HMS Southampton was a 52 gun frigate built in 1817, but moored in the River Hull from 1867.

The Southampton took up to 240 boys age 11-15, committed by magistrates if they were orphaned, not under "proper control and guardianship" or "in danger of adopting a criminal life". By 1909 it had trained 2,600 boys. 57% joined the #MerchantNavy & 5% the #RoyalNavy

When my grandad left, he joined one of his brothers who was skipper of a #Grimsby #trawler Shortly after the outbreak of #WW1, he joined the Royal Naval Reserve & in 1915, aged 27, was made skipper of an armed trawler. After the war, he continued as a Grimsby trawler skipper.
