taekook hadestown au where jungkook is orpheus, the dreamer working on a song that will finally bring spring back to the cold human world and taehyung as the hardened eurydice whos been always preferred a life on his own until he meets the pretty doe eyed songwriter
taehyung, who's lived a life all on his own, a runaway from everywhere he's been. he's learned that just getting on is a lot better than living with false hope, so he resigns himself to his fate. nobody's gonna stick around when the dark clouds come anyway. he's better off alone
jungkook was the son of a muse. he wore his heart on his sleeve, some say he was naive, but he was a dreamer, and his voice was what they call magical. it was as if he was touched by the gods, those who heard him sing felt a sense of hope despite the grim reality they were facing
one day, he meets tae and tries to talk to him with his stuttered words and shaky breaths, because this was the most beautiful man he's seen. he tells taehyung of his hopes to write a song that will bring back spring and fall, a song so beautiful it brings the world back into two
of course, taehyung rolls his eyes. spring? fall? he hasn't even felt the warmth of the sun in months, knows the god of the underworld could give less of a fuck about some mortal singing so there was no way of that happening.
then jungkook opened his mouth and began to sing.
then jungkook opened his mouth and began to sing.
and taehyung, he couldn't help but fall. he was a skeptic by heart, but even he can't prevent the walls he had built around his heart coming down
here was this boy, so beautifully endearing with his pretty voice and his unwavering compassion, even to the way he nervously bit his lip as he handed taehyung a red flower, with a simple request to go out to dinner with him
"why would i go out with you?"
"because i can make you feel alive."
"because i can make you feel alive."
and so they fell in love, jungkook—the poor boy who could make you believe in a better world, and taehyung—the one who had seen how the world really was.
all taehyung had ever known is how to be on his own, but the moment jungkook takes him into his arms, suddenly the world feels a little bit brighter and warmer. and for a moment, he forgets how dark and cold the world could get.
so they make a promise as they write their vows, that one day, jungkook will be able to give taehyung the ring he deserves, the wedding he could only dream of, and a bed full of feathers instead of the hard wood one they live on now
they vow to hold each other forever, that the wind will never change on them, and no matter how ugly the world could be, they'll stay with each other because as long as they're together, everything's okay.
but love isnt all that perfect you know? so while jungkook's busy writing and perfecting the tune to please the gods to bring back the warmth and the sun, taehyung goes out to gather some food and firewood the two of them.
he did not expect the snowstorm that was headed his way.
he did not expect the snowstorm that was headed his way.
as taehyung was scouring every corner for food, he tries to hold on to his faith in jungkook—that the song he's working on would make the gods remember. but he gets caught in the storm, yelling for jungkook, only to come face to face with hades himself
the thing about hades, is that he and his fates have basically preyed on taehyung's insecurities all his life: he takes any material comfort taehyung has, he bars taehyung from being able to form any lasting relationships.
and here taehyung was: alone, hungry, tired, and weary.
and here taehyung was: alone, hungry, tired, and weary.
so he offers taehyung a deal. a home where he doesn't have to feel hungry, doesn't have to worry about money, where he doesn't have to feel at all.
so he accepts. and that's how he dies.
jungkook wakes up to an empty house with an empty bed and finds out from others that the snowstorm from the night before was worse than initially thought. he knocks on every house, talks to everyone he sees, asking whether or not they have seen taehyung
hermes tells jungkook that hades has taken taehyung down to the underworld, so he makes a plan: to go six feet under to find him, get them both out of there, and never look back.
he hopes taehyung waits for him.
he hopes taehyung waits for him.
he makes his way to the underworld, on his feet, alone. jungkook manages to win over the three-headed dog, and the fates who had been guarding the entrance with his song
then he sees taehyung. hunched over, soulless eyes working the ground with barely any coherency left in him.
and it breaks him to see his love so.......empty. so he opens his mouth and starts singing, because it's all he knows how to do—it's the only thing he has.
and it breaks him to see his love so.......empty. so he opens his mouth and starts singing, because it's all he knows how to do—it's the only thing he has.
he sings and he sings—the song he's worked on for months, his song that he's nearly perfected with taehyung by his side, voice breaking as tears fall from his eyes at the sight of his lover so broken, then he sees the mist clearing from taehyung's eyes.
jungkook can barely breathe as he's smothered by taehyung's arms.
/what was he doing here? why is he here? how did he get here?/
why was jungkook in hell for him?
/what was he doing here? why is he here? how did he get here?/
why was jungkook in hell for him?
he never thought the day would come where he would march right up to the god of the underworld, to persuade him to let him bring the soul of his husband back to the surface.
he never expects his song to break the god too.
he never expects his song to break the god too.
but as hades levels his own teary gaze with jungkook, as he takes his own wife's hands into his own since jungkook had reminded him of the way hades had felt about persephone with the song he had written, jungkook thinks he actually has a shot at bringing taehyung back with him.
that his song worked and hit the god's heart.
hades has a condition: yes, both of them can go back, but jungkook has to walk in the front, tae in the back, they can't walk together side by side as they had wished and jungkook can't look back at any point to see if tae's following him
if he does, he's damned taehyung to the underworld forever.
though jungkook can't promise the ring, the wedding, and the beautiful bed anymore, taehyung takes his hand in his and reassures jungkook that so long as they have each others' hands to hold and fire to be warm, he'll be fine. he just wants jungkook. jungkook just wants him.
so the two of them renew their vows—to trust in each other and to wait for one another despite how all of this seems like a trick but it's really just to see if jungkook trusts himself and taehyung or if the temptations and doubts that the the underworld brings is too much.
and as they prepare to make the journey, taehyung pulls jungkook into one last kiss before they head to the start of the path to the exit.
they didn't hear persephone asking hades if he thinks they'll make it and him responding somberly, "i let them try."
they didn't hear persephone asking hades if he thinks they'll make it and him responding somberly, "i let them try."
jungkook didn't mean to put his focus on how the wind was changing, how it seems like he was alone walking in this dark place, how it was starting to get colder and his footsteps, echoing and giving him reassurance that he was making his way out started to sound almost mocking.
"who do you think you are?"
"why are you all alone?"
"where is he, jungkook? do you think he's still behind you?"
"why are you all alone?"
"where is he, jungkook? do you think he's still behind you?"
the voices of the fates and tortuted souls inside his head seemed to get louder. he couldn't hear taehyung behind him trying to reassure jungkook that he's still there. to not lose the same faith that he had inspired in him.
with every step jungkook takes, taehyung takes his own as well.
doubt starts coming in, and jungkook's heart was faltering. was taehyung really there? or was he here on his own?
doubt starts coming in, and jungkook's heart was faltering. was taehyung really there? or was he here on his own?
/who am i? why am i all alone? who am i to think that he would follow me into the cold and dark again?/
/jungkook, are you listening? i'm right here and i will be until the end./
/who am i to think that hades wouldn't deceive me to let me leave on my own?/
/jungkook, are you listening? i'm right here and i will be until the end./
/who am i to think that hades wouldn't deceive me to let me leave on my own?/
he used to see the way the world could be, but after being exposed to the the darkness of the underworld, he doesn't know if he could see it for anything else than the way it is now.
/jungkook, you are not alone, i'm right behind you and i have been all along./
/jungkook, you are not alone, i'm right behind you and i have been all along./
but doubt has a funny way of messing with the way you think, lets loose all the battles and wars fighting within you.
and as jungkook makes his way to the final step that would get him out of the underworld, he hesitates.
and as jungkook makes his way to the final step that would get him out of the underworld, he hesitates.
and turns around.
there he was, taehyung, following right behind him, with his hand stretched out towards his lover as if preparing himself to grip jungkook's hand the moment they made their way out.
"it's you."
"it's me."
"it's you."
"it's me."
except now the ground below taehyung's feet started moving and down he went, doomed to hell forever.
and jungkook couldn't do anything else but fall to his knees.
and jungkook couldn't do anything else but fall to his knees.
or haha sike kook manages to grab tae's hand before the floor gives out and pulls him out and they live happily! ever! after! after, the two of them lie in the grass while he traces tae's chest with his finger and softly humming a new melody he wrote for tae the night before :)
