#Gellhorn met combat photographer Robert #Capa during the Spanish Civil War. She considered him “a real brother” & after his accidental death she wrote, “I miss him every day. It only grows.”
In 1938, back in the USA, #Gellhorn began a lecture tour to raise funds for Spanish citizens who had become refugees in their own country. There are several letters from her to Mrs. Roosevelt about their plight.
By 1939, #Gellhorn had found the run-down finca at San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, rented it for $100/month & paid for its renovations to make it inhabitable with her Collier’s money. #Hemingway joined her there.
