This is by far the best information I have heard about the challenges of the state response to #Covid_19 from one of the countries which have been most successful in dealing with it #Singapore. Professional, competent, balanced, big thanks to @EdinUniUsher for making it available https://twitter.com/EdinUniUsher/status/1243499444181532675
Singapore has close ties to China & was among the 1st places to get the virus, in January. Since then, it managed to control domestic transmission, the recent surge in cases (still, they have only 879 cases in total) is due to residents returning home. Until the last week...
... until the last week they had a clean sheet" of no death cases at all, even now there are only 3 deaths. At the same time they managed to keep the country running, minimise the disruption & support financially economic casualties. It might be a good idea to learn from them.
They have been also keeping the public well informed, providing daily information service & counteracting fake news, which are swamping social media everywhere. If you want to continue following @EdinUniUsher webinars, you can follow them on twitter. Clarity in confusing times!
#Singapore is not the only place from which we can learn. South #Korea had the 1st #Covid_19 cluster outside China. In a 52M country, they have still less than 10000 cases (9661) & 158 deaths. #Japan, with 126M & one of the oldest populations on earth has 1866 cases & 54 deaths!
#Taiwan with 24M & obvious links to many parts of China, has 306 cases & 5 cases of death. #Thailand with a population of 70M & some of the earliest cases, kept it to 1525 cases & 9 deaths. #HongKong with a population of 7.5M, 642 cases, 4 fatalities. Examples worth studying.
A thread of a few tweets about the way Singapore & other East Asian countries are dealing with the current #Covid_19 crisis, based on the first webinar by @EdinUniUsher, more to follow from Thursday, 1/4, @suzyjstyles @haspelmath
