Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Rei Ayanami’s birthday! Let’s all wish her a happy birthday. Rei, you’re the best anime girl ever ♡ to celebrate her birthday, I’ll have a thread of some of the pics of her I have saved on my phone.

Fun fact about Rei: she is one of the very first ever kuuderes. Kuuderes are “characters who are often cold, blunt, and cynical. They may seem very emotionless on the outside, but on the inside they're very caring — at least when it comes to the ones they love.”

Rei’s voice actor is a certified nurse.

Rei means 0 in Japanese, which seems to be a connection to Rei’s lack of identity. She was also named after Rei Hino from Sailor Moon in an attempt to get one of the show's directors, Kunihiko Ikuhara to work on Evangelion.

In the popular 2007 anime Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Rei, alongside Asuka, as well other female characters from other Gainax works, appear in episode 6, dressed in bunny outfits working in a bathhouse.

Rei has a dating game: it’s called Ayanami Raising Project is a dating game and it’s licensed by Gainax

Ayanami (綾波) literally means "twill wave", the Kanji meaning "twill" and "wave".

This one’s a little obvious but Rei’s blue hair and red eyes are the inverse of Asuka Langley Soryu’s blue eyes and red hair, a visual reminder of their opposite personalities.
