There are lots of homeschooling tips and resources for primary and secondary school students but how do you keep the pre-school aged children learning? Here’s some tips we learned from Explore Play Learn - our play and development programme based on the Aistear curriculum -
First of all don’t panic - children are at their best when learning through play. If all you do is sit on the floor with them and play you’re already winning.
There are plenty of items in your kitchen cupboard that are perfect for sensory play and story making. Fill a box and you have a ready-made early literacy class.
Sprinkle a plate or tray with rice or other dried food, grab a few different sized spoons and cups and let the kids explore. You will have hours of fun and you will be teaching early maths without even trying.
Some string and a box of o-shaped cereal is a perfect way to develop the important motor skills that will help with writing later on. And you’ll end up with a few new pieces for your jewelry collection.
Build a fort. Ok so we’re just a bit proud of our reading tent and we know you won’t have something like this in your home but a blanket over a table works just fine. Bring in a torch if you have one and tell some stories, or just chill out.
And lastly, don’t worry about the mess. It’s all part of the learning process and a sign that you are doing a great job. #StayHomeAndStaySafe
