What exactly do the #COVID19 tests do? Basically, from the sample taken [usually throat swab], they use the Reverse Transcription real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction to:
1. transcribe RNA to DNA
2. Make copies and amplify target gene [mostly E or N]
3. Confirmatory - ORF1b gene

The antibody test is primarily a serology test and serves as useful a purpose as the RT-rtPCR that is being used to detect people with infections. The former checks for antibodies that the body came up with to counter the SARS-COV-2.
