st: ent watch thread

i’m finally starting to enjoy it but i’m most of the way thru s2 and i still don’t actually care that much about the characters individually. F

i like t’pol but that’s probably just bc she does the same thing i do where i get overly worried about something and nag everyone around me about said thing going wrong until it finally doesn’t happen and i look paranoid LOL

archer is just kirk minus about 40% of his himbo (so he’s still a himbo for sure but like. less so)

trip is if miles o’brien was a himbo and from florida instead of ireland i stand by this evaluation very strongly Mans Cannot Catch A Break!!!

hoshi is anxiety but annoying sorry hoshi i want to like you but most of the episodes with you as the focus just end up with you having a nervous breakdown and becoming useless which is relatable but not fun to watch!!

they really committed to reed’s signature personality trait being that he doesn’t have any

i wish i was joking there’s an entire episode about how no one knows anything about him and the punchline is he doesn’t either

phlox is growing on me LOL he’s deeply cursed in an enjoyable way but he has stiff competition bc generally in st the doctor is the best character on the show and ent. is far from the best show imo so not good enough sir sorry

i will say tho!! the episodes where they do stuff with the vulcans/andorians/general pre-federation stuff is really cool!! i wish there was a little less weird filler and more of those (like even if they’re just filler too i want more andorians and tellarites :(( )

i used to kinda be like ehhhhhh about the setting/aesthetic but i’m fully on board for it now..the contrast btwn tng (and even tos) era is really cool re: how they act when meeting a new species (ie. picard not acknowledging differences vs archer always making a face LMAOOO)

also i have to say the time management in the writing has been really good in the episodes i’ve watched recently? it’s super quick paced, cuts to scenes w new info, leaves out boring repetitive shit, and implies passing time/further developments w single words its rly tight/good

even when i don’t find the plot of an episode that engaging (like the one i’m watching rn actually LMFAO) i can still respect the craft and watching for those kind of craft choices has made even boring episodes worth watching

also fuckin. the beginnings of the more dramatic episodes don’t fuck around they start at what would be like. minute 2-5 of an episode of ds9 would which is good pacing but does take away some casual conversation moments (most of the time i’m not missing that for these guys lol)

i also can see some of the transition from the other berman shows to discovery weirdly enough

the cinematography and some of the. feel idk (need to investigate/think on it more) have some of that “modern feel” to it but is still EXTREMELY early 2000s instead of 2010s

I JUST REALIZED THE EV SUITS ARE THE SAME AS THE DISCO ONES TOO which is funny bc they’re very 2001: a space odyssey lol

another odd similarity i’m putting down to time period as well: way more visible injuries on characters

trip can’t go a single episode without bleeding from his face and it’s great (and i feel like disco does the same while the other shows hesitated a bit more w that)

i hate to admit it but the theme song is growing on me. it’s so fucking bad but i sing it every time. fml

Season 3 Very Angry Murderous Archer is making me realize that discovery would be way less dumb/more interesting/more authentic feeling if it was set closer to enterprise than tos. just a thot

war w klingons bc federation was just established, sec31 is just being formed so its more relevant, “humans aren’t anywhere near the moral idealism of tos” type of energy fitting the violence/wackness of disco, the “first mutineer” thing actually being plausible. Code: Cracked

it wouldnt fix EVERYTHING but it would certainly make things much easier to swallow

hell it would even make it better bc of the vulcans still needing to get over their condescension to humans!! michael would become a super interesting character as a result

they could have even made amends for the fact that enterprise was killed in its prime...Opportunity Missed!

ok i joke about this show but in the span of 1 (one) episode it went from about ds9ish level of darkness/moral ambiguity to HOLY FUCK OOF OW YIKES!!!!!!!!!! :((((((((

its. very good. but also very painful to watch. every 5ish minutes theres another thing that breaks my heart a little more :(( the slowness of the filler is necessary for the contrast too...archer goes from Kind Goofy Dad energy to like. Massive Motherfucker but in a good way
