Here’s why M4’s being pulled in is stupid and how med students are really just a liability. And how I’m an idiot

Like 3 weeks ago, I’m on my surgery rotation, really trying hard to impress this doc. He’s notorious for being hard and I really want to show him that I’m not dumb.
This whole rotation has been pretty slow, because elective surgeries had been slowed down already and I hadn’t seen much. Kinda bummed but whatever.
We get consulted to put in a Vasc-Cath, central line, and arterial sick in the ICU on this septic woman. Full on ARDS, on the vent. Skin mottled. She was flu + so they told me to get PPE (never done it before really) and I thought “nah just the flu who cares”
He told me to shave for my N95 mask and I said no. I’ll go in without a tight seal idc but I’m not shaving. He took some clippers from the OR and shaved himself and also gave himself the worst razor burn I’ve ever seen
So I’m in there with my PPE donned (incorrectly), he did the vasc-cath and central line, told me to do the stick.

So I’m doing the stick radially and I’m not getting it done. I switched to femoral and I’m still not getting it.
I told him I’m having trouble and he’s like “well maybe you can’t get it bc she’s 70/40 right now.” And then we look at the monitor and went into asystole and I just internally panicked.
He said “Ankur can you start chest compressions while I call this code” and leans out the door and yells code blue. Meanwhile (I’ve never been in a code before), I’m leaning over this railing in full PPE (couldn’t get the railing to go down) giving the worst compressions ever
I’m on my tip toe’s in full PPE just doing compressions and I am so out of shape and it’s so hard to breathe with that N95 thing on. I tried to remember the Office episode with the song but i couldn’t in the moment. Meanwhile more people are getting in the room doing other things
I didn’t know what they were doing bc I was told to do compressions and I was going to keep going until I was told to stop. Meanwhile I’m exhausted. And then suddenly, I went to pull my shoulder up and I pulled out the vent tube thing
I didn’t extubate or anything, just the little cap-on thing came off and then frothy sputum went flying EVERYWHERE. I’m trying to put the cap on, there’s like 12 people in this room, they all just got exposed and now I also look like a complete moron.
Someone else took over compressions. Eventually they push enough pressers and did other magic stuff and we got ROSC and everything was all dandy. Except there was now sputum on the walls
I took off my PPE. Went directly downstairs to get lunch (took the elevator bc i was out of breath idc) Tried to eat chicken parm but couldn’t cut the chicken bc my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Chicken parm was dank tho.
Next day they told me she was being tested for COVID bc she was somewhere nearby someone. I felt like such an idiot that I put all those people are risk. But she came back negative and it was all good.
So that’s why medical students need to stay home and become Spacebar warriors until this is over. And how im a moron. End.
