I feel a rant coming on. Like @IrishSeedSavers, we have had the maddest busy week ever selling seeds. The public are ahead of the government in predicting that food supply chains are under pressure and so they are thinking about growing their own. Yet @LeoVaradkar closes down
all the farmers markets. These are where all the small vegetable growers make their living. They have lost their business supplying restaurants, and now they are closed down completely. This leaves us with no choice other than to shop in a supermarket.
For as long as I can remember the EU and the Irish state have subsidised the production of animal protein in one form or another, and ignored the horticulture sector. They have also ignored the importance of seed production.
This is a major breach of food sovereignty, and for those not familiar with the concept it is about the choice of what and where we buy our food. Food security is about their being enough food, Food sovereignty is about choice.
Someone actually called the Gards today on a woman delivering bread in Skibbereen. Many of the stallholders from @SkibbereenMkt are doing deliveries rather than take the welfare payments. If you are happy for a small number of supermarkets to control food supply
carry on shopping indoors and let all the small producers give up. If you want their to be some choice in where you buy your food, please find small producers and support them. OK rant over.
And another thing... if the multiples gave a hoot about local producers they would be clearing out an isle for them instead of peddling all kinds of imported junk food.
