fuck it i'll make this a watch thread https://twitter.com/marxdesidonner/status/1244044909717401600
prince of darkness (carpenter, 1987)
the blair witch project (myrick/sanchez, 1999) - 16mm shots
the blair witch project (myrick/sanchez, 1999) - faces in mini dv
mad max (miller, 1979)
bad boys for life (adil & bilall, 2020)
bad boy for life (adil & bilall, 2020) - these frames had me losing it (especially dj khaled's fucking credit hahahaha)
fear city (ferrara, 1984)
body double (de palma, 1984) - did a 1984, melanie griffith-as-sex worker, sleazy noir double feature last night (both first-time watches), and gotta say, de palma's horny remix of "rear window" and "vertigo" really did it for me
vertigo (hitchcock, 1958) - thought revisiting this one right after seeing BODY DOUBLE might be a good idea. turns out it fucking was. flawless movie; can't believe i couldn't see that before...
war of the worlds (spielberg, 2005) - last time i saw this was when it came out... when i was 5... how did i not lose my shit??? no diss toward the masterpieces JAWS/JP but this is the berg's scariest and possibly his best. def gonna get my hands on the new 4k. tom cruise owns!
jackass: the movie (tremaine, 2002) - modern youtube pranksters don't come close. the perfect stressed-the-night-before-an-exam watch; if the late, great ryan dunn can shove a toy car up his ass and still function, you can do anything.
aloha (crowe, 2015) - massively underrated! didn't win me over until the second half, when i realized this movie was trying to be a romance (built on quiet glances and hawaiian spirituality) first, and a comedy second. can def see myself adoring this even more on a rewatch.
dog day afternoon (lumet, 1975) - didn't love all of it but seeing this for the first time definitely reminded me why pacino is possibly the best to ever do it. his eyes! and cazale too, holy shit, what a performance
tampopo (itami, 1985) - as warm, delightful and comforting as a good bowl of ramen. the titular lady is genuinely one of the sweetest and kindest characters put to film. the food foreplay scene was a, uh, choice, though.
lola (demy, 1961)
the bridges of madison county (eastwood, 1995) - "i gave my life to my family. i wish to give robert what is left of me."
ocean's twelve (soderbergh, 2004) - "what do you mean, like... morally?" the greatest stoner heist movie ever.
what's up, doc? (bogdanovich, 1972)
ghost in the shell (oshii, 1995) - a long overdue blindspot finally taken care of. one which has irreparably broken my brain. as in, i'm still in shock.
carrie (de palma, 1976) - wish they showed us anti-bullying PSAs in school that were more like this tbh
i shot jesse james (fuller, 1949) - "i'm sorry for what i did to jess. i loved him." the perfect companion piece to dominik's much later film.
house (obayashi [RIP], 1977) - look, i PROMISE ill watch more of his stuff (this rly motivated me!); i just knew this was probably the best starter. possibly the boldest first feature of all time?? sincere, heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measure. editing + score were MVPs!
his motorbike, her island (obayashi, 1986) - "...and summer is where my heart lies." motorbike canon.
inherent vice (anderson, 2014) - dunno how im typin rnnnn, 4 insane frames here:
nw: angel's egg (oshii, 1985) - !!!
spider-man (raimi, 2002)
bonus:
clueless (heckerling, 1995) - “may I please remind you that it does not say ‘RSVP’ on the statue of liberty.”
behind the candelabra (soderbergh, 2013)
heaven can wait (beatty & henry, 1978) - uhhh this might be my new favorite sports movie??
midnight run (brest, 1988) - kinda conflicted on whether this movie earned its sentimentality. on the other hand, de niro and grodin are a fucking dynamic duo, so, i ain't complaining. also, was not expecting farina and pantoliano and PBH to show up? lotta god-tier yelling too
spider-man 2 (raimi, 2004) - "am i not supposed to have what i want? what i need? what am i supposed to do?" haven't seen this since i was a kid; i was so captivated i barely remembered to take screenshots lol. superhero KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE owns imo
booksmart (wilde, 2019) - didn't even bother screenshotting anything for it, just a bad movie
smiley face (araki, 2007) - happy 4/20 folks
the beach bum (korine, 2019) - "fun's the fuckin gun"
a new leaf (may, 1971) - hbd elaine may! unfortunately didn't *love* this one, but she's incredibly kind and sweet and clumsy in it and it's really endearing (and she did kinda go hard directing it)! besides, we'll always have ISHTAR lmao.
ishtar (may, 1987) - this movie is a fucking masterpiece and i won't let anyone say otherwise. also hbd charles grodin!!!
the witches of eastwick (miller, 1987) - far hornier than i was expecting tbh, despite how hot the whole cast is.
femme fatale (de palma, 2002) - i did not expect any of this movie to turn out the way it did. jesus christ.
the long goodbye (altman, 1973) - this movie is a fucking masterpiece (unlike the movie at the start of this thread😬), but even if i didn't like it, young arnie showing up would've been worth it anyway
