I’m going to make a little quarantine thread of all the films I watch during lockdown. consider this my little list of recommendations.
day 7 of quarantine: I watched a Turkish film on Netflix called “Miracle in cell no. 7“ and it was one of the most beautiful heartbreaking films I’ve ever seen. I’d 100% recommend it if you’re looking for something powerful and emotional.
day 7 of quarantine: I also watched “The Big Sick” & I didn’t expect it to be as beautiful as it was. A little mixture of culture, comedy, and love.
day 8 of quarantine: I just finally watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer for the first time and I have no words. The score was intensifying and thrilling. I feel so heavy and my heart aches. What a powerful picture! can’t believe it took me this long to see it.
day 11 of quarantine: 1922, based on Stephen King’s novel, was a really thrilling film. I really enjoyed the suspense and horror. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something a little fucked up and gory.
day 15 of quarantine: I watched HoneyBoy and it was an amazing film. I couldn’t take my eyes off it, so captivating in the way it’s told. A semi-autobiography of Shia Labeouf and his relationship with his dad. Powerful.
day 16 of quarantine: Finally watched The Pianist and it was a great film! The performance and music was so touching. I really enjoyed the movie.
day 30: finally got around to watching The Lighthouse directed by Robert Eggers. easily one of my favourite films. I watched it and then spent hours studying every part of it from the score, camera, performances, dialogue and lighting.
day 31: watched Short Term 12 and the story captivated me from the opening scene. real, raw, heartbreaking and emotional. Performances were really good! I loved it!
day 33: Velvet Buzzsaw. it had my attention from the very first shot. I loved everything about this film from the meaning behind the script to the performances. I’m so happy I watched it, I’m a huge Gyllenhaal fan and I think he did amazing as he usually does.
day 35: I watched The Florida Project- this film invited me and made me a part of it, the way Dafoe’s character is connected to everyone else. I loved the rawness, life and heaviness I felt with every shot. The film is about details and what it becomes at the end of the picture.
day 35: Us (2019) dir. jordan peele. Peele’s vision when storytelling is like no other- the camera holds weight to the story and the actors execute his vision so perfectly in this film. It didn’t matter where the film was taking me, I was connected with the characters so well.
day 44: The Witch (2015) was a very thrilling, mysterious and beautiful film. As Robert Eggers first feature-film, it gave me an insight of how delicate and intricate he enjoys his stories being told. Just like his 2nd feature, The Lighthouse, I couldn’t look away for a second.
day 46: Hot Summer Nights (2017) was a really poetic film in my opinion. poetic in its colors, in its script, in its performances, in its story. I enjoyed the film a lot, it was a really fun watch. The way the story is told is also very attractive and retro.
day 48: Waves (2019) was beautiful, visually and in its approach. I didn’t expect the film to take me where it did. It opened light but ended heavy and powerful. It took me sometime to understand but when I did, it blew my mind. the power of details in this film.
day 52: long overdue but I finally watched Emma. (2020) i fell in love with this interpretation of Jane Austen’s novel. each shot was gorgeous and breathtaking. the satire, romance, music, framing & colour threw me over the moon.
-Not to mention, Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance 😍 her close ups and expressions were so ethereal and amazing. I watched two nights in a row simply for the details and scenes I couldn’t get over. Easily one of my favourites. If you love literature and romance, this will kill you.
