I've seen some section of the opposition supporters ignorantly ridicule the President for mentioning "Greater Kumasi" in his address to the nation yesterday.

Not like I was surprised nor expected better from them tbh. It's their trade.

A little education ...
In May 2011, the @JDMahama administration hatched a plan to roll out a 93mega-city project which was to properly coordinate and manage the growth and development of Kumasi and six outlying districts.

It was in good taste.
As part of the project, a Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area, which would cover Afigya Kwabre, Kwabre East, Bosomtwe, Atwima Kwanwoma, Ejisu-Juaben and Atwima Nwabiagya Districts, would be created.

By September 2013, a comprehensive final report on this was commissioned.
Adding greater to Kumasi widens the geographical meaning of the city to include surrounding and/or adjoining areas that are all part of the metropolitan.

It can be used interchangeably with the prefix "Metro".
In fact, that's the technical and appropriate description under the new report that was outdoored in 2013. It simply refers to the KMA and its adjoining assemblies.

Greater Kumasi literally means the surrounding areas as well as the defined city - in this case, Kumasi.
