Next in our series of klassischer Berliner fußball… @NFFC v @BFCDynamo, 1979/80 European Cup quarter-final 1st leg -
Having won the 1978/79 DDR-Oberliga title, this was Dynamo’s first season in the European Cup. They arrived into the quarter-finals having eliminated Ruch Chorzów (Poland) & Servette FC (Switzerland) in the first two rounds. Brian Clough’s Forest were reigning European champions.
Following a 1-0 away victory in England (the first ever German victory over an English team on home soil in the European Cup), the 2nd leg was played at Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sportpark in front of 30,000 spectators -

@BFCDynamo @NFFC #NFFC
#NFFC progressed to the semis 3-2 on aggregate after a 3-1 win in Berlin. They defeated Ajax in the semis & Hamburg 1-0 in the final at the Bernabéu, making them the only side to win the European Cup more times than their domestic top flight league, a record which that stands.
After getting knocked out by the eventual champions in the 1979/80 European Cup, the same happened to BFC again in 1981/82 ( @AVFCOfficial) and 1982/83 ( @HSV_English) – making it 3 times in 4 years that Dynamo were knocked out by the eventual champions.
The 1983/84 European Cup campaign was an eventful one. Having defeated Jeunesse Esch (Luxembourg) in the 1st round, Dynamo were drawn against Partizan Belgrade, where two BFC players fled whilst in Yugoslavia - https://twitter.com/BerlinFooty/status/1192833385816842240
Despite being two players light, Dynamo progressed to the third round, and this is where we land for this week’s edition of klassischer Berliner fußball… @ASRomaEN v @BFCDynamo, 1983/84 European Cup 3rd round 1st leg -
After a 3-0 home win for AS Roma in the Italian capital, BFC Dynamo had it all to do in the 2nd leg at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark two weeks later -
Dynamo won the 2nd leg 2-1, but that wasn’t enough to stop Roma progressing. Roma defeated Dundee United in the semi-final, setting up a final in their own stadium, the Stadio Olimpico. But the dream ending didn’t happen; they lost 4-2 on penalties to Liverpool in the final.
In this weekend’s edition of klassischer Berliner fußball we look at @BFCDynamo’s 1984/85 European Cup campaign. Having been knocked out by British clubs in 1979/80 ( @NFFC) & 1981/82 ( @AVFCOfficial), Dynamo were drawn against Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in the first round.
Under Ferguson’s management, @AberdeenFC had won the Cup Winner’s Cup in 1982/83 and the subsequent Super Cup. A 2-1 defeat away at Pittodrie in the 1st leg meant that Dynamo had to win their home tie to progress to the second round…
Would love to hear @RaeComm's thoughts/memories of this tie...
