So, as I have nothing going on, I decided to go on a marathon to finish/publish all my old art, here is the thread.
Final artworks will be posted on my instagram @ chgendron
N°1 : my most recent WIP a digital portrait w/ style losely inspired by oil painting techniques.
My goal is to finish the eyes under 2h but I just spent 1h30 on her left eye and I'm still not satisfied.
#break I'm rereading La Peste (how original in those times), here is a peak at my art circa 2011.
I wonder if this fits into the "works to finish" category.
Update : those 3h were spent on eyes and ears and I stopped counting how many times I listened to Black friday from the eponym musical (that song rocks and my vocal chords hurt from singing it).
Honestly, this is so time consuming, I love it but I own a total of zero (0) patience so that's a struggle.
Painting when you've forgotten any painting convention old white bearded men taught you since you were 5 is : fun.
#break I went out to remember what daylight and fresh air were and took some pics of my hometown. fyi I've been taking pics of this valley for a decade and it does not get old.
It gives me a good view of the overall progression of my art, too.
So, this drawing would probably be way quicker if I just switched brushes, but I am commited to my stupidity.
So after doing jack shit the last couple of days for *reasons* I'm back at it and : look how pretty she is, I just want to finish her.
#art #illustration #portrait #digitalart #digitalpainting
Alright so I'm going to stop with this one for now because I'm just getting slower and slower at this point. I've finished the face and I'll probably do the rest in a few work sessions in the following order :
- rest of the skin;
- hair and hairs;
- clothing;
- background.
So I scanned this old comic I did last year for an assignment, not worth much, but I'll walk you through the cleaning process.
My scan is quite bad so what I usually do is erase all the white space. 1st I darken the image so I can see more clearly and then I select the background by hand and SUPPR.
As I'm messy, lines aren't really straight and things don't really aligned, so I'm doing a grid and I'll correct all that in Photoshop.
Here is the result, now all I have to do is to color correct.
Tadaa
Today I'll be launching myself into doing home made face mask cause sunday is craft day and also : fashun.
As I don't have a printer I had to trace the pattern from my computer screen #art #systemD
I cleaned up my tracing just cause I wanted an excuse to use my french curves (french curves being the object pictured, not my buttocks).
So I asked my mum for fabric, turns out she has 3 trunks full of it, which I never knew and is quite practical. I picked cotton and linen for outside fabric and lining and a light fleece that will go in between and will be removable.
I'm now supposed to topstich but have no idea of what it means, so we'll stop there for today and I'll google it tomorrow.
As we enter a new week of quarantine, I realise I won't be able to print shit and, as most of my work is print media / book related, this is going to be an issue.
I'd gladly order that expensive printer I have been eyeing for a while but, ethically, it would be wrong to give more work to delivery people for non-essential items.
Funfact : topstiching means doing a stich that will be visible once object finish, so it is supposed to be regular and clean, which I'm unable to do.
My mom complimented my seams, saying she can't be as regular as me. Fyi, my mom has been handsewing dozens of bags by hand and her seams look impeccable to me. Comme quoi, we really all have a tendency to depreciate ourselves.
You know what I am realising now that this mask is coming together ? : I could do Plague Doctor Masks.
The whole point to this thread was to finish works in progress, lol.
Welp, after a quick google search for patterns and a rolodex spin through my seamstress' knowledge, this is probably well above my pedigree so I will put it to the side for now.
Mask completed. Problem : my nose is too big and there is a huge gap between my cheeks and the fabric that lets the air out. I'll have to add the metal thingy that you can see on medical masks, but that's for another day.
Today, I completed the editing of this pic I took DECEMBER 2018 and started retouching a month ago (queen of unfinished business).
Here is how I compose my zines. Not really clear, right ? Be reassured, I will have forgotten what it means in an hour too. It is just to make sure my endless calculations were correct.
How many grids for the same zine you reckon I can do ?
I have FINALLY finished to put everything in place for that zine from my trip to Belfast from december 2018, no the only thing I have left to do is edit those 35 pics, uhu.
After testing different thing, I went for a very simple grid that can fit the instagram format + the 20x15cm dimensions I chose for the print version and randomly put the pics in it , rearranging stuff until it looked alright.
I spent all day obsessing and harmonizing every spread, bc I have that kind of time. #quarantine
I've chosen a third of the pics to edit and then I'll harmonize the rest with those ones.
This one was already done.
Classic dab.
A couple of things :
- don't launch yourself into doing a ton a Photoshop editing when you have no clue were you want to go ;
- I am once again caught up by the fact my knowledge in proper exportation of docs is inexistant ;
So I'm going to search for an online course on getting materials ready for print and restart the editing from scratch.
In the end, as I have no printer available until ???, I decided to edit as if it was for a screen purpose and I will do a 2nd round of editing when I'll need to print.
Also, except one or two, I kept the editing to a minimum, just correcting stuff because that is just supposed to be a quick zine, nothing more.
And let's be honest, the zine is more interesting than the pic themselves.
Arg. I just saved the flattened psd over the layered one and it doesn't even look right.
(which means that if I want to modify it I have to start from scratch).
Whatevs. I'll deal with that tomorrow.
Anyway. Here is a sample of the final thing, for now it is posted on my personal insta ( https://www.instagram.com/p/B_jvKlxByXH/?igshid=1ozqnvol016f9 ; https://www.instagram.com/p/B_jvdXphUfn/?igshid=ucaz66lkj6hk ; https://www.instagram.com/p/B_jvnp_hfYi/?igshid=1x9g0mnm6dqjq ). I'll print it once the quarantine is lifted.
Next one, I have this triplet of more or less autofiction pieces to finish
Alright, I tried to film a bit my work process, with the way my desk in arranged, my big head always ends up in a frame, so, that will be for another time.
Nevermind, I went to YT and found the proper set up 👍
So while drawing #SixFanarts I used the previous set up to film my process but I'm not sure how to edit it yet, so instead here are the step I took for my Jojo fanart.
#SixFanarts : the first suggestion was Josuke from Jojolion. To be true to Jojo spirit, I used Kate Moss as a pose reference. Photo by Mario Sorrenti.
#SixFanarts : Here is the sketch.
#SixFanarts : It's inked ! Idk what happened with the nose, but it is here.
Here is the scanned version of Josuke
Last unposted on #SixFanarts : Turns out capturing Cage's spirit in drawing was hard AF so here are some attempts at Nicolas Cage that weren't approved by the committee (the commitee is me).
This WIP captured so well Cage's spirit I was half tempted to leave it like that, maybe just throw some snake skin pattern to make it accurate to Wild at Heart and that's it.
I'm hoping to wrap it up before the end of the day.
I had given up on that strip cause autofiction always feels just a tad overdramatic and I hate that ; but now that everything is coming together I'm starting to really warm up to it.
It might not be the most technically advanced artwork but it gets its point accross.
At least I think so.
This was a comic I started when I was working as an Au Pair. I wanted to reflect a bit on the monotony of my life at that point, doing all the same things, never leaving the house, talking only to the same 5 people. Ironically I'm posting it now that we're all in this together.
I was able to find the original sketch for this comic, thanks god because I had no recollection what it was about. It's about a lil guy that loves ikea furniture.
So... All I did all day was backgrounds. #efficient
Trying to get into drawing clutter.
At this point this thread is slowing down cause I'm actually gearing up for new projects, but, promise I'll finish my WIPs.
