I am going to do a series of tweets about Bolton Castle. Bolton Castle is in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. The building of the castle began in 1378 by Richard le Scrope, Lord Treasurer to Richard II.
There is a sweet little church right by the castle. It is dedicated to St. Oswald. It has history to the 12th century, and the current building is about 70 years older than the castle. It is possible Mary Queen of Scot's attended services here in 1568/69
The road goes right by the castle, which meanders down the hill, looking out to the wonderful Penhill
If you wander down the road, it almost feels Lord of the Ring-sy :) #boltoncastle
And you are treated to an awesome view of the castle on your walk back up #boltoncastle
During the civil war, John Scrope held the castle for the King and it suffered heavy damage from Parliamentarian forces, pretty much destroying the North West corner of the castle #boltoncastle
Bolton Castle is open to the public, and closes for weddings and over winter. It took me 4 attempts to find it open.😄Each of these photos were taken on a different visit. #boltoncastle
One of the first rooms you enter is now the cafe, I believe it was originally part of the Great Hall. Beautiful space #boltoncastle
Part of the castle is sparsely furnished, there are kitchen prep areas, halls where men at arms ate and slept, and a dungeon! The upper floors on the east side of the castle are ruined but the ground floor remains in tact #boltoncastle
The castle was entered through a gate to the east, and the courtyard is still impressive #boltoncastle
The views from the windows are all across Wensleydale and Pen Hill, and the castle itself maintains beautiful gardens #boltoncastle
There was a chapel inside the castle, and although open to the elements, you can still pick out some reminders of its daily life #boltoncastle
Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned at the castle for 6 months in 1568/69. The Solar, or Great Chamber was given to her to use as her Privy Chamber. It is a huge room, with raised windows looking over Pen Hill. For some reason I didn't take many photos of it đŸ€” #boltoncastle
The fireplace had this little shelf on the right, apparently Mary used it to warm her wine! #boltoncastle
The Great Chamber at Bolton is where the Lord and Lady of the castle would dine and entertain. Mary, Queen of Scot's dined here under her cloth of estate. #boltoncastle
It was nice to see King Richard III's banner hanging in the Great Chamber. John Scrope, the 5th Baron of Bolton was an ally of Richard's. He was injured at the Battle of Towton and he fought with Richard at Bosworth. #boltoncastle
This is the bedchamber given to Mary, Queen of Scots. It's on the floor above of the Solar, and has the same amazing views. The bed in the room is later, but apparently haunted! đŸ‘» #boltoncastle
That's the garderobe in the centre, next to the hanging. People used to hang their clothes in there as the ammonia smell put off bugs and therefore their clothes were protected. #mmm #boltoncastle
This is the bed chamber that Lord Scrope moved into so that Mary, Queen of Scot's could have the best room. It is on the floor above. #boltoncastle
Finally, we explored the roof of the castle and the views across Wensleydale are breath taking. I managed a few shots even though I was panicking about the height đŸ€Ł #boltoncastle
I hope this thread has given you some distraction, Bolton is phenomenal & I thoroughly recommend you visit once all this is over. It's majestic, a lot remains in tact, & it tells its own story very well. Plus it's in the Yorkshire Dales, what more could you want 😊 #boltoncastle
