the shit monsta x have been through; a thread for new monbebes about their past mistreatment, mismanagement, and why they're always apologising to us.
i really debated making this thread because i know it might get a negative reaction but i feel like its important to explain that mx have been through so much & monbebes have too. it is a genuinly unique relationship mx have with their fans and the events of 2015-18 explain that?
disclaimer: i became a monbebe in 2016. ive asked a few of my friends to help with this thread to make it as accurate as possible, but it might not be 100% and feel free to tell me if ive missed anything.
PREDEBUT: (2013-15): a bit of backstory to the members

- shownu, wonho, jooheon and gun were designated to debut in a starship group called Nuboyz. they had a few introductory stages and interviews before their debut was suddenly cancelled to instead put them into no mercy.
- changkyun left home to persue being an idol and completed high school on his own. the company of the group he was going to debut in - Nubility - went bankrupt and his debut was cancelled suddenly.
- hyungwon moved in with minhyuk in seoul to also follow his dreams. the two went from company to company together and have since talked about their lack of money and sharing one blanket to sleep with because they were broke. they eventually ended up in starship.
NO MERCY (2014-2015)

- monsta x were formed from a survival show in which 13 trainees competed to win a spot in starships 7 member group.

- this show was heavily criticised at the time for labelling the boys with numbers and refusing to use their real names.
- it was also implied, at the time and since then, it was mostly staged. starship knew who they wanted for the final lineup and put the trainees through unneeded mistreatment for exposure.
- the members knew changkyun before his entry in episode 8. starship used him, an 18 year old boy, for shock factor and made him cry multiple times. when he was the one added to the final lineup, many original fans of the series decided not to support the final group in protest.
- already, monsta x were experiencing fans leaving due to something outside of their control. media hype was high, however, and things looked good for the new starship boygroup.
2015 (RUSH, TRESPASS)

- monsta x debuted on may 14th, 2015, to general hype and interest. the korean public liked Trespass and it was known to the idols in the industry. Unfortunately, it did not garner them their first win.
- starship had made it very clear that it was important for mx to do well. they refused them access to their phones until their first win, and put immense pressure on them.

- they came back after 4 months with rush, giving them no.3 on a music show, and hero shortly after.
- it was during this time, when rush did not get a music show win, that the boys took to vlive to apologise that they werent good enough. Wonho assured fans they'd do better, and that they were sorry for disappointing us.
- then, disaster struck. during hero promotions - their biggest hit so far - changkyun injured his ankle during practice and had surgery on December 16th. soon after, minhyuk tore a ligament in his knee and went for surgery sometime in January. all promotions were put on hold.
- two out of seven members needed indefinite recovery. starship decided to pull mx from the public eye for the next few months. this was the worst time for monsta x.

many, many fans threatened to leave the fandom. when starship remained inactive on the situation, they did leave.
- fancafe was flooded with negativity in a time monsta x needed us most. its hard to convey the damage of a few month old group going on a 6 month hiatus properly. fans dropped them, the public forgot them, and netizens mocked them.
- this lead to netizens poking around their past. photos of wonhos ulzzang days resurfaced, and many took this as an opportunity to take them out of context and slander him and his group, calling him a cr/minal and stating he was not fit to be an idol. sound familiar?
- in april of 2016, they came back with All In, a beautiful mv about overcoming prejudice and oppression. it was a hit internationally, but the concept change fell flat in korea. they were all quite reserved during these promotions, and wonho hid from the camera a lot.
2016 (ALL IN, STUCK, FIGHTER)

- during this time things were calm - i became a monbebe. the fandom was tiny with a few dedicated fans as most had left or lost interest during their hiatus. stuck performed ok internationally, but the boy only grew more invisible in korea.
- things dipped their lowest during fighter. i cant convey to you how much fighter was disliked upon its release. The concept was considered bad, the stages underproduced, the costumes lazy, even wonhos hair got hate. a few disliked their 'new' concept so much they dropped them.
- fighter charted on melon in the 80s after the first hour of its release and then disappeared for good. during this time, the boys also voiced their discontent with their lack of phones, saying they couldnt make friends in the industry and they felt ashamed because of it.
- the disrespect mx faced in the industry can be seen during the DMC festival of 2015, in which their special sorry sorry choreography was stolen performed by other groups instead. wonho took to vlive to call out MBC for stealing and assured us it was not the other idols fault.
- during the 3rd episode of s1 of monsta x-ray, the boys talked about their debut times, how much they struggled with getting through each day, and how they wanted to win number one in 2017 so their fans would no longer be ashamed of them.

2017 (BEAUTIFUL, SHINE FOREVER, DRAMARAMA)

- monsta x did a few promotions for the next 6 months but were otherwise fairly inactive. in april of 2017, they came back with beautiful.
- beautiful did not chart on melon. it recieved the groups lowest scores on the weekly charts. however, the song exploded in the kpop community and they grew internationally like crazy. starship finally gave them access to phones and a lightstick after 3 years of being monsta x.
- the Attitude of the kpop community and netizens towards monsta x at this time was really, genuinely appalling. i wish i could convey to you how small a fandom we were until halfway through 2017, how everybody knew everyone, and how others constantly discredited mx.
It was true that they didnt chart, but every day monbebes were called lazy and monsta x called lazy too. There were even a few mock-hashtags that trended celebrating how mx couldnt chart despite being from a top company. It was horrible.
- We had genuine fears for their disbandment. We thought it was inevitable.
- monsta x were confirmed for their first world tour - attending asia, the US, and Europe. however, hyungwon fell ill with a dangerous skin disease and was absent from all US stops. starship did not update on his condition regularly and many fans felt worried/angry.
(CORRECTION from somebody lovely!! beautiful was actually released in Marxh of 2017!!)

- nevertheless, the tour went ahead and it was a great sucess. despite not charting, they were loved all over the world. the boys would hold an arm out for hyungwon when he was not there.
- in november of 2017, monsta x came back with dramarama. on the day of the showcase it was revealed wonho was ill and would not be in attendance. a backup dancer covered his parts and wonho later took to fancafe to apologise for letting fans down.
- then, on the 14th November, 2017, monsta x recieved their first win. every member cried, and in their speech they thanked monbebes for always sticking by them and asked for us to stay forever. later, they took to vlive and bowed until their noses touched the ground to thank us.
- ask any monbebe what they were doing at this moment and they will be able to tell you. it felt like everything we had worked for had finally happened. the boys were finally happy, because their fans liked a "number one group".
- in Jan of 2018, monsta x travelled to London to perform for an event called kpopknight. during this event, their hotel room information was given away by the organisers, their bus hit a post amid a swarm of fans, and the arena was so empty they began letting people in for free.
- monsta x were mocked for this by netizens and international media alike. despite it being starships fault for allowing mx to attend this poorly organised event, the one strength monsta x had - their international fanbase - seemed non existent.
2018 (KPOPKNIGHT, JEALOUSY, SHOOT OUT)

[i forgot to put this marker before my past two tweets, i apologise]
- they have refused to talk about kpopknight to this day. starship never released a statement about their mistreatment at this event, and most monbebes do not know it happened.

- then, in March of 2018, monsta x came back with jealousy.
- two weeks prior to their comeback, they released the destroyer film. many have speculated this was meant to be the title track and was changed last minute. the boys talked about having to learn the choreography, shoot the music video and prepare the albums in a week.
- not only did this cause minhyuks knee injury to act up again as they were overworked, but it meant the jealousy mv was lower budget than the rest of their comebacks. netizens mocked monsta x as, with the correlation of kpopknight, they seemed once again like a failing group.
- many international fans expressed their disappointment at the concept change from destroyer to jealousy. i remember some of my mutuals dropping them over this.

- yet mx stayed hopeful. kihyun spoke in a vlive about how this was going to be their big Korean hit.
- it wasnt. jealousy barely charted and they fell off the korean publics map after dramarama once again.

- they recieved one win after weeks of promotion. many people spread rumours the company paid for their win that have stuck around to this day.
- then, during their weekly idol appearance, the hosts made very inappropriate jokes about monsta xs overseas fans. you can look them up if you wish, but i wont be posting them. articles were written, and stan twitter 'cancelled' our boys despite them being very uncomfortable.
TW// weight

- minhyuk was also made fun of by the hosts for his body. i have neglected to put in starships treatment of mxs bodies, as i know its a trigger for many, but kihyun, shownu, wonho, jooheon and hyungwon have all spoken about sse pressuring them to lose weight.
- their second world tour was far more successful than the first. they visited north and south America, Europe, asia, and later toured Japan. in all of this badness, the fans around the world reminded them we were always here no matter what.
- mistreatment of the fans occured at almost every venue, however. starship never released a statement after multiple people fainted, were taken to hospital, were physically hurt by staff and security, and were left for hours in pens called 'waiting lines'.
- articles were written, word was spread, and the blame ultimately ended up on monsta x. luckily this has mostly been pushed to the side as bullshit (which it was), but to all the fans that were hurt (including me lol) know mx love you so so much.
- at the same time this was happening, netizens were attacking wonho for always showing his chest and body. they discredited his work and achievements, saying monsta x only used sex appeal to gain fans, and that none of us truly liked them or their music.
- while no statement was ever released, wonho wore less revealing outfits for some time after that.
- in October of 2018, monsta x released shoot out to great success. the song exploded in the korean industry and even reached the general public once again. it charted on melon for a few days and recieved 4 wins from music shows.
- the album also achieved critical acclaim internationally. it was a great success ♡ it seemed bad times were finally coming to an end. in each of their speeches, they thanked monbebes old and new for loving them despite their faults.
[NOTE: a lot of people are asking for me to include the abuse wonho and shownu suffered for their bodies during 2018. i wont be besides from the small points above because it's a topic i dont like discussing, but you can ask other monbebes to explain if you want ;;]
- I'm going to end this thread soon. It got longer and more attention than expected. Of course, more things happened after this. 2019 brought the mistreatment from the English PR team, Wonho being forced to leave and Jooheon taking a break for his mental health .
- to all the people who read this, our boys need your support. theyve been through hell. they're constantly apologising because people have left in the past, because things have never worked out, because as it seemed it was getting better another thing came along.
- please love them. they love us so, so much. it doesnt matter if you joined the fandom in 2014 or last week - you're just as important to them now more than ever. monbebes keep them going and always have.
- im ending the thread here. im sorry i cant reply to all of you, but im emotional seeing new and old monbebes quoting this with nothing but love for our seven boys. please keep supporting them. please.
