we need to fuckinh recreate the late 2000s/early 2010s of Internet culture i desperately need it
it's insane how Tumblr and 4chan were actually p similar during that period
like God please bring back hiimdaisy Persona 4 / MGS comics, an active Homestuck that is actually under Hussie's control and not marked by age, 4chan that's not completely infested by redditors and /pol/t*rds, tumblr where insane ppl were the exception rather than the rule
can we have a "weird twitter" that's not oversaturated w/ dsa predators overusing dril memes, can we have social media sites that aren't overrun by boomers, can we have conspiracy theorists who aren't fucking sycophants for the right-wing establishment
the correct take is that GamerGate did change the Internet in a way, and for the worse, but that it wasn't rly the instigator; it was merely one symptom of a deeper and larger underlying problem
like you can't attribute everyone on Tumblr going fucking insane and attacking everyone else on the site just to GG alone, there must've been other causes. you can't attribute all of 4chan being infested w/ /pol/ to it alone either, that'd been brewing for a while
i'm trying rly hard not to schizo allcaps here but as others have pointed out *every single meme from the past couple years has a corresponding meme from the early 2010s*. the new wojaks are rage comics. the new doge is a bastardised original doge. advice animals are now ironic
(that's not quite right - new doge is literally just Insanity Wolf w/ doge overlaid)
going to go cringe theorybrain here but the difference is that the old memes were largely simple unironic presentations of themselves, whereas the new memes are characterised by *passive nihilism*. it destroys but not to create anything new
trying to conceptualise some shit and here's the issue: that moment arose from multiple sources coalescing in certain places. the unique culture of SA gave birth to 4chan and tumblr which also had unique cultures. other forums and places too contributed.
the Great Mid-2010s Shitshow emerged from the slow death of SA and 4chan and the death anxiety of tumblr, forcing most onto a handful of platforms like twitter. it all returns to nothing
the new decade has just begun. if anything new is to be created Twitter has to be fucking destroyed as a platform. it collects the debris of the past and endlessly grinds it until it stinks and rots, endlessly repeating its own death
how i don't know - it needs to be stripped of its appearance of officiality, the place where politicians and celebrities go to make public statements. the Web needs to be fractured into millions of pieces again, and new giants rise by merit
basically what i'm saying is HEY DOES ANYONE KNOW SOME GOOD SOFTWARE FOR A HYBRID FORUM AND IMAGEBOARD I NEED THIS FOR A SPECIAL PROJECT AND I HAVEN'T FOUND A GOOD CANDIDATE AFTER TWO WHOLE YEARS OF SEARCHING
look i didn't actually do anything special or diagnose any problems w/ the world in this thread i was just thinking abt how nice it wld be if we cld have things like meduka meguca again
anyway i've heard of v influential forums growing from communities for v particular things, so if any of u want to make a new web then uh i might try to form a @_RoseWithTeeth fanclub (please listen to this and become a fan to join the club hahahahaha)
