1st day of remote instruction as an UNDERGRAD STUDENT (I’m taking Span for fun):
• we’re going synchronous which is for a language class
• I missed our 1st online class on Tue I’m a good student w all the tech needed. There was no announcement, I was just supposed to know

• we haven’t been told how/if attendance policy will change - we have strict rules & I don’t want a B
• Panopto recording didn’t work for Tue’s class, prof will re-record the lesson
• international student had to return home - time zone difference is 10 hours. Looks tired.

• it’s hard to keep up w muting mics (as requested) & participating
• the prof is letting us volunteer to participate, so we hear from the same 3 people all class (I am one of them)
• 2/15 students left their cameras on all class - is this weird? Should I tell them?

I’m working on instruction for a 1-hour 1-shot next week and have spent A LOT OF TIME on it - probably too much. My instructor is clearly not spending as much time prepping AND THAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Her instruction is good enough! I should have spent less time on mine.

My profesor can’t tell the difference between my voice and another person’s voice. Today the other person isn’t even in class! There is no participation grade but I’m petty and don’t like this other person getting “credit” for my participation

“This is just a reminder that you need to keep an eye on the homework assignments...Please check..calendar so you are not late. If you are late you will be losing points & that is a pity...Also try to have your mics..working, since I need all of you to start participating”

This new hmwk is on top of the hmwk we already had, which was not a small amount. I asked if they were for a grade & she said no. Am I a bad student for NOT wanting to do EXTRA work that’s not for a grade right now? I feel very defeated reading this, sent Friday at 5pm.

I asked about the extra work. It is not for a grade (whew!) & according to her not extra. We can’t see online modules until the week before, so . I guess she planned to radically change the kinds of assignments we do online halfway through the semester

Today’s adventure is our webex room was set to start at 11:30 PM instead of 11:30 AM, so it won’t let me in. I sent her an email heads up. How long do I wait here refreshing the WebEx page for her to change it? I already missed a class & every 3 absences drops us a letter grade

I know I have said almost only negative things so far. Like my profile pic, I am a pretty happy sunny person. I love school - I have two grad degrees! But remote instruction without empathy or communication is killing my spirit and my joy and my love of learning this language.

I think this class will end my journey with Spanish at UNLV. I do my hmwk on weekends because job & life. I missed a bunch of work originally due M 4/20 but under pandemic due W 4/1, W 4/8, and F 4/10. At least some were due 4/12 & 4/20 so I’ll get some credit? I am so sad.

There is NO CREDIT for late work so I guess I have more free time because I can’t muster up the energy to do an assignment for no credit. I know this is a very small thing to be sad about, but apparently being an excellent student is part of my identity and I am so frustrated.

The online part of class was neither good nor bad, but content wise I learned why my book doesn’t say “vámanos” even though I was told that my whole childhood and THIS IS WHY I’M TAKING SPANISH! To solve all my childhood mysteries like hielo y grandote y pórtate bien.

In addition to filming an oral presentation video (no Apple files accepted), writing a composition, & finishing chapter homework (all due on Tuesday), I now have to write a paragraph in response to a reading (not for a grade) & preread a story for Tuesday.
