I might start a CovidCinema Diary via twitter thread to open up conversations with other Cinephiles on what we are all watching during this time. What do you guys think?
Here we go (!). Quarantine film #1: The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Rating: 4.4/5. A fantastic masterpiece based loosly around a true story. Every. Single. Shot... could be framed and turned into art. I cried. A must see. On Amazon Prime for those who have it.
Quarantine film #2: Logan Lucky. Rating: 3.9/5. What a fun one. Steven Soderbergh delivers the joy and sense of thrill similar to the Oceans films, but with a redneck twist. I LOVE Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, and boy do I love Riley Keough. I still cried tho. Go watch on Amazonđź’•
Quarantine film #3: First Reformed. Rating: 4.3/5. A slow burn, both extremely complex and dark, the film got under my skin and stayed there. Will God Forgive Us? What is our responsibility, and what is the role of fate in our world? Check Amazon Prime for this underrated gem.
Q Film #4: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Rating: 3.9/5. It had been on the list for a while, & I am so glad I got to finally watch it. Let me just say: girls RUN THIS WORLD. I literally want to learn martial arts just so the women in this film can slay me. Platform: Netflix.
Q Film #5: Unseen. Rating: 3.1/5. Real documentaries teach us and touch our hearts; Unseen does so in such a powerful way. Is it perfect? Far from it. But I found myself feeling for these women in ways that enraged me at their circumstances. Painful, but important.
Q Film #6: Platform. Rating: 3.3/5. The meaning behind this one smacks you in the face and leaves little to the imagination, but it is interesting regardless. Feels like Snowpiercer but less Bong-like, so... it gets a 3.3. Check her out on Netflix.
Q Film #7: Pi. Rating: 3.5/5. Aronofsky, what a guy! This is probably my least favorite of what I’ve seen from him, but for a directorial debut, what a trip. Definitely a psychological slow burn, and if you have 80 min on your hands for some B&W intensity, go to Prime and watch.
Q Film #8: The Royal Tenenbaums. Rating: 4.3/5. Wes, as always, steals my heart. So many complexities within a film of my favorite stylized director. The scene of Richie in the bathroom physically pained me... I have a feeling this one will sit for a while. I bought this one.
Q Film #9: The Flu. Rating: 2.9/5. If Hallmark Movies for South Korea existed, this would take the cake. Although overdramatic, it was oddly similar in relation to today’s pandemic. The silver lining to the film was definitely the young actress, Park Min-ha. Found it on Amazon.
Q Film #10: Good Boys. Rating: 1.5/5. In my defense, my dad guilted me into watching it with the family. Absolute garbage, sad its even on this list BUT... when in quarantine... even the worst movies may be watched. Also... seeing Tremblay go from Room to this was excruciating.
Q Film #11: The Birdcage. Rating: 3.6/5. I am so glad I finally got to see this one, what a joy. So many laughs and what great chemistry between Lane and Williams. Cheesy at times, its a great laugh and a stellar cast. Check Amazon Prime for this one.
Q Film #12: Dances with Wolves. Rating: 4.1/5. A fantastic film, such beautiful landscape. This movie captured the struggle of finding true identity in something once feared. I am one step closer to watching all Best Picture (92) Winners. I bought this one, and am so glad I did.
Q Film #13: The Last of the Mohicans. Rating: 3.8/5. My mom saw I was watching Q Film#12 and made me watch this because she said it was way better. It wasn’t, but it was still good nonetheless. DDay Lewis is an absolute masterpiece in all he does. My parents owned it on DVD (!)
Q Film #14: American Hustle. Rating: 3.6/5. Ive already seen it but honestly the women in this movie are my guilty pleasure. What POWERHOUSES. When I feel small, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence remind me of my power. Yeah this film has flaws, but it is fun nonetheless. I own it.
Q FILM #15: My Soul to Keep. Rating: 2.2/5. I went into this with little expectations other than to pass 2 hours of the day, and boy did I succeed. Wes Craven gives us the ultimate Craven-ized film with cheap scares and tWiSt EnDiNgS. Love it. I saw it on HBO GO.
Q Film #16: The Roommate. Rating: 2.0/5. Tonight, my roommate and I decided to watch a trash horror on roommates. Felt like Gossip Girl but with gore. I also think camera guy accidentally zoomed in 80% during the entirety of the film. What a beautiful mess. Platform: Netflix.
Q Film #17: Upgrade. Rating: 3.6/5. This one was just a big bunch of fun. I loved the humor, the innovative technology, and Marshall-Green was a standout. Did I love the supporting actors... definitely not. But. The. Camerawork. The. Stunts. Worth it. Its on HBO Go.
Q Film #18: The Predator. Rating: 1.5/5. What a joke. Someone recommended this and I need to recall who so I can send them to the hospital. Horrid. Why has Jacob Tremblay fallen so far in my mind, literally in this thread of films? Okay I’m being dramatic but... its bad. HBO Go.
