1/ I kept tweeting the last few weeks that spreading panic - instead of facts - about Coronavirus in addition to extreme lockdowns, will lead to angst, panic and suicides (and a stressed healthcare system too). The results are incoming, as my next tweets show. But before we start
2/ What defines spreading panic? Example:
A) Saying that 50% of the population will get Coronavirus in a year and that 2% - 3% of them will die. In the US this means 3.3 mill to 4.9 mill deaths in one year. No country/region has anywhere close to both those dark numbers at once.

“Both those dark numbers” as in 50% of the pop infected and also a 2% - 3% Case Fatally Rate (CFR). Italy at this point has 7,500 deaths which is a high CFR of 10% but 99.8% of the country does not have the virus. If a huge portion in Italy does have the virus, then the death
4/ rate at this time is less than 0.10%!

9/ Days ago, Trump started warning about suicides. Media outlets such as AP and ABC “fact checked” him rather than agreeing that it is an issue that leaders need to take into account. ‘The cost of doing nothing on Corona can cost 2.2 mil lives’ (ABC).

@PortlandPolice reports that calls to the suicide hotline is up 23% in the ten days since the state of emergency. Folks, this is before sharper lockdowns were in force and this is before millions are without jobs (for a while).

and hygiene orders because hospitals can snap with only a few thousand severe cases at once. The stress on hospitals is EXACTLY why spreading angst/panic is BAD. Freaked masses are stressing EMS, doctors & ERs at a time when they need less stress.

About the US:
In 2017, Drug ODs killed 70K.
In 2018, 48K died from suicide.
Every 1% increase in Unemployment (that holds for a year), increases ODs by 3.3% and suicides by 0.99%.
If unemployment averages 20% for 2020 instead of 3.5% it will add 38K ODs and 8K suicides.
