$2 is not hazard pay. A “special bonus” relative to individual store sales is not hazard pay. Workers are falling ill across the country to keep shelves stocked and communities fed.

Trader Joe’s — a so-called “progressive” company — still refuses to give its workers hazard pay.
1. High risk workers (elderly, immunocompromised or living with) are forced between working in a high exposure situation or sacrificing wages to stay alive
2. Trader Joe’s is refusing paid sick leave for mandatory quarantine
3. Trader Joe’s lied about their no glove policy
4. Workers have been sent home without pay or forced to quit for refusing to not wear gloves on the register — the most high-traffic area of the store.
5. Trader Joe’s is directing Captains to waste time trying to union-bust instead of coming up with actual policy to protect us.
6. All evidence strongly suggests Trader Joe’s — your beloved neighborhood grocery store — would rather let the crew and customers become dangerously sick than require stores close, letting Captains make the call.
“No bureaucracy” becomes “All autocracy” very quickly in a crisis.
Your Meyer lemons and Joe-Joe’s are not more important than the health and safety of your community — which includes the workers stocking shelves and ringing you up.

You need to stop shopping at Trader Joe’s until they realize what we’re calling for is a matter of necessity.
We aren’t a bunch of Marxists beating a silly drum because we love chaos.

We’re Trader Joe’s workers who love our jobs but our company is clearly hanging us out to dry, working us until we get sick, and endangering ourselves and our communities just to make a buck. It’s heinous.
We’ve offered the company some very actionable and significantly important kaizens but they’re so hellbent on union-busting they can’t see these are urgent issues and they’re slacking big time. Missing the forest for the trees.

Jon Basalone, do your job so we can do ours.
The great irony here is Trader Joe’s is so desperate to avoid a union that they’re refusing to hear our valid pleas for help, which sends frustrated workers who wouldn’t ordinarily be “union types” running straight to us.

Phenomenal work, guys. Just beautiful.
Jon Basalone, President of Stores, would surely love to hear from customers about the company’s refusal to provide hazard pay, lying about their no glove policy, and refusing to provide paid sick leave for high risk workers. [email protected]
