#CoronavirusUK a thread, whilst out on our once a day exercise walk, both for us and the dog. I saw people calling up to windows and having actual conversations albeit from a distance.
My girlfriend mentioned about how Penarth has a group of people nearly 250, who are organising themselves into help groups to support their areas of town. Then of course the great news that overnight 170,000 people had registered to be volunteers already.
I was reminded of a line in Dr Who, a Tom Baker episode, Genesis of The Daleks. The Dr had set explosives in the Dalek laboratory that would destroy them before they became a universal threat.
The line was part of the philosophical discussion as to whether he had the “right to do this” and that out of their evil, “some good would come”. Civilisations would stop warring and ally themselves against a common enemy.
Similarly against this global threat, people are starting to help each other and check on their neighbours, asking if they need anything. Calling on their relatives and bringing that community spirit back allying themselves against a common enemy.
I hope that this grows and also finally when we have got through most of this pandemic, that some small part of this spirit will remain in the communities, irregardless of colour, creed, religion and age group.
I’m a nurse in an NHS ED, I have had Coronavirus & I’m over it. I’ll also be a volunteer to help people in mine & my girlfriends area. I know more of you will as well and I hope many will continue to do so because they want to not just when they have to.
