A thread to answer the question "How are you? Heard things in NYC are pretty bad!"
Getting this well-meaning question almost hourly, from friends, family, old classmates, twitter fam... basically almost anyone I've ever known who remembers I live here.
So here's how it is. ...
As the media reports, numbers in NYC are surging. Gov Cuomo has been excellent with detailed updates.
However, the "bad" impact is felt mainly by patients suffering from or vulnerable to the virus. I'm sure it's pandemonium in city hospitals.
Those of us at home, it's...Ok 🤷🏽‍♂️
Caveat - I'm talking mainly about my area, which is 9 square blocks I haven't left in a while. So my observations about daily life is specific to neighborhood (East Village/Gramercy).
Here, daily life has been mostly okay, except for the feeling of being cooped up.
By that I mean
People are observing self-quarantine. And when out for daily fresh air walks, mostly maintaining safe distance.
Grocery stores are open and decently stocked. Also taking precautions. Our corner store has black tape every 6 feet to help people stay apart.
Grocery delivery available. Alcohol delivery too (it's NYC, that's an essential service by law we learned!)
Food delivery available from almost all restaurants. In fact unbelievably fast delivery cos with no traffic they can just zoom over.
Water, electricity, internet all good.
Delivery guys in masks, gloves etc.
So on a personal level, things aren't as bad for us as the media suggests.
Again, just personal level.
The cases are going up and the infrastructure being overwhelmed. Tough times for the healthcare infrastructure of the city.
But despite living here, we only know the badness of the general situation through media and internet. And Cuomo briefings. Like you all. We have no inside info or further details.
And also, a little tired of having the same conversation with well-meaning folks every hour. 🙈
Hence this thread. Will pin and send links whenever asked next.
And will update if anything changes on the personal front, like grocery stores emptying.
