Just got dropped by the NYS bus at #UfungamanoHouse from #JKIA. Using a circular dated 24th March 7:15pm, I identified this hotel at 11pm. Interestingly, I only got here at 5:30am. When the police brought me in, they guard was welcoming n said they have room.
Attached circular from #JKIA MOH official.
The guard comes back & tells me that there is no room. I tell him that is not true and that MOH directed me here. After 10 min of waiting, he comes clean & says people have run away from me. But...
He will give me a room at the furthest corner, but with conditions. He will go and open it, and then leave. I should then carry all my bags in without touching anything on the way including the door. Then he will lock.
Question is, how will they administer food to me for 14 days if anyone handling me is overly cautious? I don't blame them but worried about how MOH is preparing these facilities. Is it just business? By the way, the rate is not subsidised in any listed hotel.
I have to carry my bags to 2nd floor, yet there is a lift but am not allowed to use it.
Btw, they had told me to wait outside the building not to contaminate anything, only to change their minds after I asked them what time it is to stay in the cold.
There is a lot of PR & business interests at play. All hotels listed are charging regular rates. None of the hotels we dropped folks had any visible plans for quarantine. Those who checkin can interact with staff & other tourists freely. Actually, one can be visited by family.
Ill end by saying this was a rushed decision and would only have worked if government had a designated facility where MOH will closely monitor all travellers. No visible plans of us being tested or being tracked.
I am 100% pro-quarantine but this should come with close monitoring of all subjects. Btw some checked into approved furnished appartments & no one checked if they are empty prior.
On another note, the NYS & Police handling this matter are being overworked. Those we talked with were completing a 24 hour shift. Why? You cant drive a 60 seater bus for 24 hours & still be fine.
They say they have no special place to quarantine after their shift & when they are back at their duty station - #JKIA, they at times find that food is finished & they have to make their own plans, again, mingling with other folk & spending money they don't have.
I end by asking, where did the money allocated for #Covid19 in #Kenya go to? Reminds me of missing masks...
Note, I was cleared by immigration at #JKIA at 23h00. Boarded the bus past 2am & only got to the 'hotel' at 5:30am.
I checked in at 5:30pm, havent been served a single meal, not even a bottle of water in the room. Just remember, they locked me in this room and I can only wait.
Still waiting. Not been attended to si nce 5:30am. No water, no food. Interesting times.
Finally they let me out of the cage and allowed me to have my first meal in the open. #GuestOfTheState
I talked with the health official who came to check on me at 4:30ish. She talked to me by dialing my room phone though she was in the premises. She said they will check my temp after 4 days and ONLY get tested if I have flu like symptoms. She will be coming daily. #LockDownKenya
Day 2. Generally ok. MOH & officials came today. They didnt speak to me but had a word with mgt. Am the only resident in this facility so far, so service is fast - 100% improvement to yesterday.
Presidential Delivery Unit PDU officials also came thru in the afternoon while I was working at the garden. They spoke separately to mgt then came to me. They asked how I am & said I should be tested on day 5. I told them MOH official said this is only if my temp is high.
PDU officials said they will followup as everyone being quarantined MUST get tested.
I didnt manage to give an update about my evening yesterday. MOH official called me later and shared the number of someone I can call if she is not reachable, especially at night incase I develop any worrying symptoms or get complications. We havent talked today but am fine.
I have some 2 not so loyal cats that join me for meals at the garden. Their company lasts as long as there is food. The officials visiting me are finding me ready with stories. Confinement is lonely.
The director of this place just called this evening after I finished my meal in the room (am not allowed to sit in dinning areas just incase am sick) to checkup on me & we ended up talking for 5 min. They are doing a good job now with what they have. Am surviving well.
Today being day 3 was much better than the other 2. I was telling my old man it feels like high school. We snobbed school food in the first few days before "acclamatising"/clearing chapati stock. I finished my dinner, all of it.The male waiter said, "I cooked". So, new chef 😉
Health officials didn't come, but I saw this text "From Sunday 29th, the Ministry of Health will embark on mass testing for those who arrived in the country from Sunday 22nd 2020. Testing will be done along the WHO guidelines and in accordance with one’s arrival date"
I think that clarifies the concern on whether we would all be tested. I hope the results will not take too long to be released.
Clarification, just had a whatsapp chat with the Ministry of Health official supervising my stay. She did come but saw me from a distance enjoying my lunch at the garden & decided not to interfere. (...with the one younger cat - the other one was late & missed most of the party).
Day4/14 as a #StateGuest. I was on my way to the garden when I noticed many people in white coats, definitely MOH officials coupled with police of different kind. I wasnt sure what was up but hopped this woun't stand in the way of my (& the cats) lunch delivery at the garden...
I was curious but the presence of the officers was abit intimidating, so I didnt enquire. I hope corona gets scared too... My bro from another mother, a medic, was coming for "visiting", as I had sent him a request for royco, chocolate etc.. 3 days ago, when I was alone & sad.
So, I thought because he is one of them, they would allow him to speak to me for atleast a minute. From the garden, I saw his car passby & got excited like we did in High School when we would see a guardian walking in...
I walked swiftly to stand close to the many officials, when one of the lady with a mask covering most of her face looked at me talking. I told her I cant hear. She moved her mask (which now covered her eyes) & she told me, you know you cant be visited or get food from outside...
I told her he is only bringing me additional clothes (and royco & chocolate - seriously, just honey, coffee & fruits). When he got to me, he literally placed the items on the floor 2 meters away from me, saying hi and asking "uko poa"(are you well), I said yes, am alright...
...and he said to me, vumilia tu (hold on), as he left. That was it. I picked my stuff & went back to the garden. The waiter had brought my food when my bro was driving in, & so I found him waiting on me least the cats decide to serve themselves.. So I sat & ate. Food was great..
...my curiousity continued on why the officials were still there. I eventually got to know thru one of them. A couple from Rongai - the real one, had violated self quarantine & were then brought here by force to complete their quarantine. Good to know we are 3 now...
We had a call earlier & chats with the MOH official who just shared the following circular... so am here till april 7th...
Am worried after a chat with an MOH official. Order of testing: clients with comordibity then suspects, after which they will test everyone. There are 2000 in forced isolation. 80 tests per day. Give it 25 days to complete. Isolation camps becoming #COVID19KE breeding grounds?
If the 7B ($70M?) was real money, the rate of testing should be 10 times what it is now. Our target should be 1000/day. But, health facilities are cashing in. Why cant govt take up such test centres as a start? A vanac saying "we loved money till we hated ourselves". #COVID19KE
Day 5. I had a call with the MOH official & we discussed the testing schedule. She agreed with my prediction that most of the 2000 in mandatory quarantine will complete the 14 days without testing. 80 tests per day requires about 25 days. #Covid19KE may soon get out of hand.
Besides changed behaviour & carfew, when will gov increase testing from ~80/day & increase the no of ventilators. Industrialisation CS didnt give timelines & quantity on local manufacturing of ventilators. + When will gov start mass distribution of face masks & gloves?
#Covid19KE
Day 6. I had a lengthy convo with the MOH official. In summary, the plan by MOH to start mass testing of the 2k people in mandatory quarantine last saturday is yet to start & they don't know when this will be done. Most of the 2k will be released without testing. #COVID19Kenya
"Legally", govt wont be able to keep us past wed next week as this mandatory quarantine is self sponsored. KE is the only country not providing support to this group. We have lots of learned & experience folk in govt, but decisions are either delayed/ignorant. #COVID19Kenya
Day 7, nothing much but atleast I received the testing schedule for quarantine sites. Some sites including Ufungamano not on that list. #COVID19Kenya
Day 8 & 9. Ideally as per the attached, I was to be tested today, but then govt. Most govt agencies working on this pandemic lack coordination & worse still, are not aggressive in completing their targets. GOK officials are rushing home at 2pm because, 7pm curfew!
#COVID19Kenya cases today at 110. 44 of these are from quarantine sites. Results take 3 days to process. Why? If private agencies like Agha Khan can do it in 1 day, what stops govt from upgrading? Where is the 7Billion again??
Testing the recent travellers was an easy task as they were contained in sites, but still, MOH failed. What will happen when community infections start to rise? Where are the quarantine sites? Will govt setup facilities or they just care about BBI rally tents? #covid19impactke
