Back in 2016 we sponsored a refugee family to come to Canada. Today, knowing that we're self-isolating because of travel, they brought bags of food to my front porch. Beans, dates, noodles, lentils, tahini, veggies, meat, and candy for my kid. So kind... and I'm so grateful♥️😭🇨🇦
And they just delivered food to my parents as well! Which makes me SO happy...My parents are 80 and live nearby, and I feel so badly that I can't get their groceries for them. So grateful for these dear, generous friends 💕
So. I wanted to share this because it was so lovely- but also because I want people to understand how much refugees do for the communities they resettle in. My city and my country are better, kinder and richer- in so many ways- because of the contributions of newcomers♥️
This is a scary time- and refugees are particularly vulnerable. I've just started a new sponsorship group for a young refugee. She's in sub-Saharan Africa and her current situation is precarious and unsafe. If you'd like to help us help her, here's more: http://m.charitableimpact.com/G36X
If you are in Canada and interested in refugee sponsorship, @RSTP_ca is a great resource. I've done 5 sponsorships since 2016- I have met wonderful people and it has enriched my life more than I can express. More sponsors are needed! Please think about it- it is not hard to do ❤️
If you'd like to know more about the family that helped me out, you can see some photos here. The kids are adorable- the little one was just a baby when they arrived. https://twitter.com/CBCTheNational/status/1243870453996736515
And the book I'm signing in the photo is Ghost's Journey: A Refugee Story. It was published last fall, and is based on a true story of two gay refugees from Indonesia. All the money it raises goes to support LGBT+ refugees. You can order it here: https://www.rebelmountainpress.com/ghosts-journey.html #refugees
