1/19 Trump is pushing a #coronavirus "miracle cure", a drug cocktail of the old malaria drug chloroquine (& its relative hydroxychloroquine) & the antibiotic azithromycin.

But even if it might prove to be an effective treatment, Trump is entirely mishandling this situation.
11/ Azithromycin is an antibiotic, added to the mixture because it is known to be effective against complications from bacterial lung disease and also because it has been shown to be effective in the laboratory against a large number of viruses. https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=229156
13/ So a small, controversial trial, a few outlier cases, & a history of being dangerous.

Is it possible that, with testing, appropriate levels could be determined for safe treatment, provided it does what is claimed?

Maybe. I'll leave that to the doctors.
15/ But there's a bigger underlying problem here.

ANY effective drug therapy is only one part of full treatment. You also need a strong, coordinated program, supplies, and enough of the drugs.

Controlling the spread is the first major step...
17/ This is why we talk about the need to #FlattenTheCuve.

With uncontrolled spread and a severe lack in facilities & equipment, hospitals become too overwhelmed to help patients survive long enough to get life-saving treatments.
18/ And even if Trump's miracle mixture does turn out to work, if we don't have enough of it due to severe demands and lack of production, thousands or even millions can still die purely from lack of the cure itself.
/End

A pandemic like this is EXACTLY the sort of major disaster big government was designed to tackle.

No one state, company, or person can take this on.

But one man could activate the forces our nation needs to do so.

And every day Trump stalls, more of us die by his hand.

2/3 Ignoring Expert Opinion, Trump Again Promotes Use of Hydroxychloroquine

Trump's advocacy of the anti-malarial drug has created tensions in his administration, and fears among doctors that it could unnecessarily expose patients to risks. https://nyti.ms/2JGFEcj

1/3 The more we learn about #Novartis and #Hydroxychloroquine and their ties to Michael Cohen, Jared Kushner, and Trump himself, the more this seems like some bizarre, elaborate con like the one in mentioned in Max Brooks' World War Z. https://twitter.com/DrDinD/status/1246878221146046464

1/2 And here is the key piece of information we were all waiting for: Trump himself is invested in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine. https://twitter.com/briantylercohen/status/1247356203916595202
Remember, by the by, that that initial small trial was from France, and if Trump can convince the world that this is a cure, even if America doesn't buy from Sanofi, other countries will.

It's always about the money.
