\\\\ MAN CITY HISTORY THREAD //
The argument of "no history" is absolutely ridiculous & invalid. There’s a difference between decorated history and proper history. Enough of the outdated jokes, we’ve got loads of history for you to chew on

#1 The Birth, 1880
Before actually becoming 'Manchester City' the club was born as St.Mark's West Gorton and officially formed in 1880. That's 140 years ago! That also means as of this season we are the 5th oldest team in the PL. (Only Wolves, Everton, United, Villa are older)

#2 Pride, 1894
Well sure United as a club were formed 2 years before City (1878) but we officially went from Ardwick AFC to Manchester City in 1894 while they went from Newton Heath to Manchester United in 1902. We were 'Man City' 8 years before they became 'Man Utd'

#3 Record Crowd, 1934
84,569 fans packed Maine Road for an FA Cup match vs Stoke City which for 85 years and till date still remains the record for the largest attendance in English football for a home game. Don't forget this was literally during the great depression.

#4 Massive
City's old ground, Maine Road holds the record for an English Club's Stadium with the most number of 80,000+ crowds. Little old Citeh? You best believe it!

#5 Europe, The Beginning
Maine Road became the first ground in England to stage European Cup Football in 1956.
City offered the ground to United as OT wasn't suitable for European games due to lack of floodlights and City were just keen to help and promote European football.

#6
Those first few European games were watched by all Mancs regardless of club & Maine Road hosted the largest European crowd on an English club's ground (75,598) for Utd vs BVB. They then moved back to OT for the SF where people claimed the atmosphere didn't match Maine Road

#7 European Pedigree
In 1970 City beat teams like Bilbao & Schalke, to reach the final of the European Cup Winners Cup & beat Gornik Zabrze 2-1. With that, Man City became the 15th club ever to win a UEFA competition & only the 4th English club to do so. (Spurs, Utd, West Ham)

#8 Pride of the Nation
In 1967-68 City won the league with 11 English players on the pitch, 10 of them from the same city. In fact, the entire squad comprised of English players except for Bobby Kennedy (
) who barely played.
The last All-English team to win the league

#9 The Golden Era (1960-70)
Struggles in the early 60's were followed by a promotion in 1966 & from then on won the 2nd division, league title, FA cup & ended the decade with the league cup & European CWC. At one point they were described as the most exciting team on the planet!

#10 First Silverware (1904)
City won their first piece of silverware (FA Cup) way back in 1904. This was 4 years before Man United won their first ever trophy, 26 years before Arsenal and 51 years before Chelsea.

#11 Kings (1937)
City won the league in 1937 for the first time (Scored 107 goals). Halfway through the season City were in 10th place but after a 1-0 derby win, they went on an 18 game unbeaten streak to win it while United won only 4 of their remaining games & got relegated

#12 Popularity (1904-10)
City won their first FA Cup in 1904, at the time already the 2nd most supported in the league behind Villa. By 1910 City officially became the #1 supported club in England. Hyde Road couldn't handle the massive crowds & City had to move to Maine Road

#13 Loud, Proud & Loyal
Man City have never attracted the ‘lowest crowd in a division’ for any season in their entire history even despite all their relegations.
While clubs like Chelsea (1973, 1955), Arsenal (1965) and even United (1930) have, at some point in their history.

#14 Pre-Takeover Success
City have won a commendable 11 trophies in the 12 seasons since the takeover but it must be worth noting that they had also already won 9 trophies before it. This meant Man City was the 10th most successful club in England even before the takeover.

#15 A Force to reckon with
By 1949 City were the 6th most successful team in England by points earned (4th most successful for teams that played 1000+ games).
City (6th) won more points than even teams like Liverpool (11th) and Man United (12th)

#16 A Century of Success
There has been 110 years between City’s first and last major honour meaning only two clubs in English football have a longer success span than us. Liverpool (111) and Blackburn (118)

#17 Through thick and thin
By 1977, City had over 26,000 season tickets holders. This figure was more than any other club in the league at the time.
