so now for something nobody asked for - i've ranked every verse from every drag race final song since AS2. A thread:
25. Monet Exchange - Super Queen. Monet uses her verse to say precisely nothing about herself, with the only reference to her time on the show being that damn sponge again . Low energy, barely any choreo, this is not Hall Of Fame material.
24. Monique Heart - Super Queen. Very little seperates Monique and Monet's verses - this is another generic verse, with slightly better choreo maybe? Idk.
23. Silky Nutmeg Ganache - Queens Everywhere. I’ve got very little warmth towards season 11, the queens, and this song, and I haven’t rewatched it since it aired. Silky is the worst of a uninspiring batch, and it took all my restraint not to use a pic of her fallen over.
22. Trinity the Tuck - Super Queen. Actually worse than her season 9 verse, which at least had some content. Other than 1 reference to her tuck this could be about any queen. ‘Five, seven, back to six,’ to make the rhyme scheme work is the only genuinely fun or memorable moment.
21. Miss Vanjie - Queens Everywhere. Her delivery isn’t as bad and low energy as she gets read for on the show, but the verse doesn’t put across her personality enough for me. This is odd for a queen who gets by on her personality for the entire season.
20. Trinity Taylor - Category Is. Trinity is to Category Is what Roxxxy Andrews is to Read U Wrote U. But not as memorable or likeable.
19. Brooklyn Hytes - Queens Everywhere. Again, not as bad as she’s critiqued by the judges. She’s gets across that she’s Canadian, and a ballet dancer. Good for her.
18. Kameron Micheals - American. The lyrics are kinda sweet, but to me the whole verse feels a bit juvenile. ‘I had big old dreams, bigger than my small town’ could’ve literally been written by a child. Charming, but I could happily never listen to it again.
17. Asia O’Hara - American. I’m a big Asia fan and I want this verse to work, but I just don’t get it? A lot of focus on the American dream, with very little focus on herself - other than alluding to a past ‘etched in sorrow.’ Also grating that she sings in the third person.
16. Kennedy Davenport - Kitty Girl. Kennedy barely gets 4 lines of verse and uses them to say precisely nothing about herself. She’s upbeat and energetic, but overall its disappointing.
15. Roxxxy Andrews - Read U Wrote U. It’s better to be tragiconic and memorable than fade into obscurity. I’ve won’t be discussing this further.
14. Bebe Zahara Benet - Kitty Girl. This is enjoyable to watch but pales in comparison to her ‘Rrrrrakatatititata’ verse earlier in the season.
13. A’Keria Davenport - Queens Everywhere. Having slagged off season 11, this is actually quite good. The lyrics are interesting and have some unexpected turns (‘I’m the Diahann Carroll of Ru’s Dynasty.’) The choreo is fun and well done. Bitch she’s the body!
12. Eureka O’Hara - American. Hate to admit it, but this is easily the second best verse on American. Great off the bat, with ‘Eureka? You found it!’ She misses a trick by not rhyming ‘Elephant Queen’ with ‘American Dream.’
11. Naomi Smalls - Super Queen. The only ray of light this song. The lyrics are uniquely her - ‘Serving body, no curves’ - the original skinny legend! My robbed queen of AS4, she excelled in so many different challenges, but clearly wasn’t in favour to win from the start. Anyway.
10. Peppermint - Category Is. This is a joy to watch, she’s just having the best time. The highlight is when she can’t be bothered to carry on spelling her own name. Yes bitch! We DO know the rest! Queen.
Detox - Read U Wrote U. This is great, and she squeezes in a LOT of lyrics. As she says herself, she might not be the best, but she aint the worst! I’m always a fan of queens spelling their own names, and this is no exception - the 'hold it' followed by this ‘X’ is a real moment.
8. Yvie Oddly - Queens Everywhere. By far the stand out of Queens Everywhere, the only verse with a fully realised and unique POV. I could watch Yvie contort her body for hours. Odd Bless x
7. Shangela - Kitty Girl. While some queen’s verses suffer by being painfully generic, this verse is uniquely Shangela. Plus she’s just having so much FUN its infectious.
6. Aquaria - American. This is GREAT. Lyrically tight, with trademark Aquaria off-key and self-aware humour. ‘Life, Liberty and Me!’ sends me every time.
5. Sasha Velour - Category Is. I don’t want to like this verse, and Sasha is definitely always too ready talk about how clever and kooky she is. BUT every time i watch this verse I enjoy it more, it’s unpredictable, exuberant and so on brand.
4. Trixie Mattel - Kitty Girl. This is joyful and stupid and you have no idea what the next lyric will be. ‘Got long thick legs, a tarantula!’ is a particular highlight.
3. Shea Coulee - Category Is. Shea is a star and delivers everything I want here. She doesn’t feel like a competitor, she feels like a performer. I think about the lyric ‘Leave em in my dust like Tina did Ike’ all the time. Wish she’d brought the same energy to the live finale.
2. Alaska - Read U Wrote U. Alaska only just misses out on the top spot, with this masterpiece of a verse. Full of unexpected turns - ‘I’m Dorothy, you’re Toto, GET IN THE BASKET’ is a lyric that plays in my head on a daily basis.
1. Katya - Read U Wrote U. This is a perfect verse, with not a single line wasted on filler. Every lyric gives us more insight into her twisted mind. This combined with the incredible gymnastics result in a sexy, dirty and hilarious verse that I could watch on repeat for hours.
