A thread for the best vocalist ever! People underestimate Mariah Carey and think she’s just all high notes. This women’s pitch is outstanding, her ear for music, sense of musicality, breath control, vocal technique, melismas, low notes, every aspect of singing for her gets a 10.
At the age of 19/20 not many females have such developed low registers as Mariah Carey did, especially for her not to be a mezzo or a contralto.
After a long 9 riffs she still has the control to descend down into her lower register in just one breath. And not to mention how melodic her run at the end sounds, you can hear her background singer go “mhm” more then likely impressed by her run being so complementary.
When has there ever been a vocalist to deliver growls(vocal drives) with such aggression, belt high notes (F5) on an “i” that are phrased, then go straight into a whistle note (C7) then add 8 riffs and descend down to an (E3) all in 34 seconds! Who sets the bar that high live?

Low notes, upper belts, multiple runs, sustained belts, and a chest to whistle transition which is merely impossible. The whistle register is a disconnected register so to transition from chest where your chords are open to closed chords in one breath is insane

Starting out as a background singer, i do not believe Mariah’s focus is to be heard vocally all the time. Sometimes i believe she just wants to enhance the production of the song, whether it be hidden vocals, or more so faded vocals kind of like the low note here at the end.
Multiple low notes, nice usage of space in her mouth, not dropping her chin or showing any discomfort when singing down there, and the melismas! So fluid and so natural. She was really feeling this performance.
I do believe the riff she did before the amazing earthquaking low note could be defined as a roulade.
Sometimes unless you have a pretty good ear you can miss the in between and real subtle notes of Mariah Carey. Like all the notes in between the riff of her whistle here, and her low note going all the way down to a D3 at the end.
How intricate is her vibrato to the point where she’s almost doing trills or is.....and then to throw in those quick seamless riffs

In this era Mariah’s timbre was lighter and her tessitura sat a little bit higher then her previous era’s but she still maintained her low register quality and in fact most of her low notes in this era were better supported and less pushed and or airy as they were previously.
You can hear the tonality difference in her voice here being more bright and placed higher then in her debut era she was a little more chesty and forward but the low notes are still accessible!
Towards charmbracelet era she begun being more vocal about being born with vocal nodules which a lot of people do not know can cause dryness of the throat, swelling, inflammation etc. Possibly making it hard to talk and or sing through especially when using chest/mix voice.
