During this footy lockdown, I’m going to be starting a thread on obscure football players, ranging from the early 2000s to current-day. I will update it with a new player every day until we return to playing
Day one: Llane Spaanderman

A first round draft selection in 2003, Spaanderman was a ruck/forward from WA. Had 1 disposal on debut. He played 3 games and kicked 1 goal for Brisbane before being delisted. West Coast re-drafted him as a rookie in 2006 but he didn’t play a game
Day two: Ben Eckermann

A small midfielder from Sturt in the SANFL, Eckermann managed four consecutive matches with Port Adelaide in his debut year of 2005. He suffered a concussion in the last of those games, not making the senior side again before he was delisted in 2006
Day three: Andrew Merrington

Son of ex-Bulldog Gary, Merrington made his debut with Carlton in 2000, playing as a ruck/forward. His best year came in 2002, playing 14 games for 10 goals. However just one game in 2003 saw him delisted, seeing him move west to play for East Perth
Day four: Cameron Howat

The speedy Tiger made his debut in 2006, becoming a semi-regular in the Richmond side the following year with 15 games. Was never afraid to take the game on with his pace, but unfortunately his skill level saw him add just one more career game in 2008
Day five: Adam Campbell

Born in New Zealand, Campbell was a highly-talented key forward drafted by the Dockers in 2003. He was made to wait until 2006 to make his debut, kicking 4 goals in just his 3rd game. Injuries and form would restrict him to a career of 13 games & 13 goals
Day six: Jaxson Barham

A father-son recruit for Collingwood, Barham had 28 possessions in a superb debut game against Brisbane in 2009, earning a rising star nomination. However, the dashing midfielder would play just six more career games before being axed, going on to play VFL
Day seven: Matt Shir

A medium defender drafted from Benalla, Shir played just 11 games throughout the 2001 and 2002 seasons for Adelaide, struggling with groin injuries during his time as a Crow. After he was delisted, Richmond drafted him as a rookie, but he didn’t play a game
Day eight: John Spaull

Drafted by North Melbourne at the end of 1999, Spaull debuted in 2000, playing five consecutive games and kicking four goals. He would play a further three games the following year before being delisted
Day nine: Jarrad Sundqvist

A medium defender, Sundqvist debuted for the Swans in 2002, playing one game for the entire season. He managed eight appearances the following year but was dropped on the eve of the finals. He was delisted in 2005 after nine career games for Sydney
Day 10: Nick Bruton

Recruited from Diggers Rest in the 2001 pre-season draft, Bruton debuted for the Western Bulldogs in their wooden spoon year of 2003. His career finished with an impressive stat line of one mark, one handball and two hitouts from two senior matches
Day 11: Jarrod Kayler-Thomson

A mature-age rookie selection for the Hawks, Kayler-Thomson made his debut as a 24-year-old in 2010. Had 26 touches and a goal in his second game, but managed just one more match before being delisted. He then returned to be a star in the WAFL
Day 12: Tristan Cartledge

Drafted in 2002, Cartledge was a mobile ruckman who had to wait until 2005 to make his debut for Essendon. Managed a handful of games in the red and black before being delisted. Scored a reprieve with Richmond, where he played a further two matches
Day 13: Matthew McCarthy

A tall forward known for his awkward kicking style, McCarthy had a successful debut season with Geelong in 2003, playing 13 games for 15 goals. He would managed just 9 more matches in the following 3 years, kicking a bag of 5 against Carlton in 2006
Day 14: Rhys Cooyou

One of the earliest players to be listed by the GWS Giants, Cooyou was selected in the rookie draft of 2010, a year before GWS entered the competition. He made his debut late in 2012, kicking a goal from 10 disposals against St Kilda. He was then delisted
Day 15: Matthew Moody

The line-breaking midfielder debuted for Brisbane in 2005, becoming a regular in the senior side the following year with 19 games. Struggled for accuracy in front of goal in 2006, kicking 11.19. Managed just 9 games in the next 2 seasons before he was axed
Day 16: Tony Notte

Picked up by West Coast with a draft pick secured from the Chris Judd trade, Notte was a highly-rated key forward with a very skinny frame. Made his debut late in the Eagles’ 2008 campaign, playing two games for a total of 13 disposals, one mark and zero goals
Day 17: Barry Brooks

In a career that spanned 5 seasons, Brooks managed a total of just 10 games after starting out as a first round draft selection for Port Adelaide in 2001. Moved to St Kilda, where he spent 5 years. Kicked 3 goals in a game in 2006, but was axed a year later
Day 18: Cameron Hunter

Son of Carlton legend Ken, Hunter was passed on by the Blues as a potential father-son recruit, who deemed him too skinny for AFL. He was instead picked up by Melbourne in 2002, where he managed two games in two years. Has a very detailed Wikipedia page
Day 19: Marc Lock

The inaugural skipper of the Gold Coast when they entered the TAC Cup and then the VFL, Lock debuted in the Suns’ first AFL match against Carlton. However, it would be the only match in his professional career, getting delisted at the end of 2011
Day 20: Jackson Sheringham

Recruited from Geelong’s VFL side as a mature-age rookie, Sheringham made his senior debut with the Cats in 2012, playing 5 consecutive games in a row before being dropped. He would reappear in 2014 with a further 7 matches before he was delisted
Day 21: Luke Vogels

Made his debut with Sydney in their premiership year of 2005, with the tall forward kicking 3 goals in his third match. Played in the Swans’ first final that year but was then dropped. Managed just 6 more games in the next 2 seasons before his delisting
