A Coronavirus movie thread:

I suppose I'm gonna watch a lot of movies in this social distancing. 280 character thoughts: spoilers abound, so #sorrynotsorry
Kids flicks too.

Wonder Park was pretty fun, though I had to keep up with Littlest Guy and missed some details like WHERE DID HER MOM GO?!

I'm sure I'll have to watch it approximately 136 more times in the next 2 weeks, so hopefully I catch the rest of the details.
Ford vs. Ferrari was dope, but uh, it was twenty minutes too long. 🏎️💥

Background knowledge in motorsports helped, but it did kill some of the suspense for me.
"Sorry I tricked you into watching a rom-com!"

It's alright, hon. @aliwong is funny as hell, and as the genre goes, Always Be My Maybe was pretty solid. Excellent cameo with entirely allegedly ad-libbed lines. Caused some weird circa 2003 dating dreams.
The Ballad of Lefty Brown.

This is one of those westerns that I can see myself being my Pop and half-sleeping through this on a Saturday morning. Good story, great cast. Under the radar winner.
Let's talk about Parasite. My Korean movie history is five films at best. This defies categorization. Starts out as a caper, but then it gets twisty. Well deserving of its Oscar statues!
"Have you heard of 'Dawn Wall'?"

I've read Tommy's book. There's no drama in this viewing, but it's still a fantastic climbing flick.
Perhaps Contagion wasn't quite the escape I usually get from movies. To quote a neighbor, "Not far from the reality we are currently living...except for the social unrest."

Yep.
Bad Times at the El Royale was a great ride. Suspended disbelief at all the plotlines intersecting here, but it worked.

Further, @CynthiaEriVo is a delight. I hope to see and hear her voice in many more films.
Jesse Pinkman's descent into evil was due to PTSD, unlike Heisenberg's megalomania. I was on the fence for most of El Camino, but ultimately, good flick.
Nominally, Sugar is a baseball movie and a pretty good one about the struggle to make it. What this trailer misses is the search for belonging in this life: as a young adult, an immigrant, a dreamer.
Spectre is every James Bond movie: Aston Martin, beautiful woman, shadowy secret organization, gadgets, ridiculous plot...

This one made us feel as though we were missing details from the last Daniel Craig movies.
Spurred by season 5 of #TheWire, rewatching All the President's Men. Still great.

Big lesson: GOP antipathy toward the press runs deep. It's been festering for decades.
"So, when are we getting the next one?"

I think my wife liked John Wick. Get to it, @netflix!
Knives Out was fantastic. A little bit of Clue minus the campiness, a whole lot of twists, and fantastic performances by trust fund Captain America and James Bond with a drawl.

(Yes, Jamie Lee Curtis was expectedly great, but you already knew that.)
Chapter 2's female badass wasn't quite Trinity, but also MORPHEUS! Another fun ride with a vengeful assassin

(Was it just me, or is this movie series trying really hard to be a first person shooter video game?)
Let's talk about '80s cop movies. They're so formulaic: cop leaving department, weird crime sucks him back into a case, predictable plot twist and an extraneous love affair side plot.

This one had Reginald Vel Johnson and a massive, slobbery doggo.
Emailed recommendation from my father-in-law: Magnetic, a 2018 French documentary about adventure athletes drawn to big nature. Gorgeous drone videography of many sports.

Small Roommate was spellbound!
The 13th. Phew.

1) Ban private prisons.
2) No mandatory minimum sentences.
3) Three strikes is for ⚾.
4) Make incarceration rehabilitative.
5) Restore rights post-sentence.
6) Thanks, @earhustlesq & @serial S3 for such thorough reporting on criminal justice.
I can't even begin to understand the structure behind the plot for Crazy Rich Asians. Some related themes played out in Ali Wong's flick upthread, but they weren't as mean-spirited.
Be seeing you for Chapter 4, Jonathan.
Blaxploitation films are a new experience. Why I picked Foxy Brown as my intro 🤷🏻‍♂️. It's a wild ride with some Adam West choreographed fights.

I haven't a clue if it's typical or if there are better ones. Shaft and Super Fly are also in my queue. Any suggestions?
The Lighthouse.

Man, I thought we'd seen enough of the Descent Into Madness™ genre, but here we are. Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson were great. Read up on some Greek mythology before or after: Proteus & Prometheus figure heavily.
. @CynthiaEriVo was perfectly cast as Harriet Tubman in this biopic. I can't imagine anyone honoring her legacy any better.

Now, how about those redesigned $20 bills, @usmint!
"Green Book" was some kind of cross between a buddy cop movie, a musical and a memoir set in the Jim Crow South. Complicated characters kept peeling layers, changing sympathies throughout.

Now to read the critics' thoughts...
"Foreign Correspondent" is a Hitchcock film I'd somehow missed. Spies, intrigue, assassins, kidnapping and war.

Enough plot twists to make me rewind to catch details essential to the plot. It's a great one!
Rarely are novels faithfully converted into films.

The Goldfinch could have been longer--the book certainly was. Will you enjoy the film without reading the book? Probably. The cast is phenomenal.

But seriously: Read the book.
"Mrs. Henderson Presents" was not at all what we expected. Judi Dench & Bob Hoskins were great as a wealthy widow & a grumpy theatre manager. Somehow struck a balance between a musical, period piece and peep show. Would gladly watch again.
Le Samourai.

A bit Hitchcock, a bit gangster, serious intrigue. This one had me on the edge of my seat. If you hate subtitles, parlez vous français?
As a (balding) yt person, I barely think about my hair. I can only describe Chris Rock's Good Hair from the outside looking in. He lightened the mood, but sure as hell taught me a lot. (DVD from @netflix, but it's on YouTube: )
"Widows".

Outstanding cast. Great heist plot with enough twists to throw you off. Steve McQueen killed this movie.
Scary Movie Month has finally begun. Mostly thriller, but definite October feels

If you haven't seen it yet, Ma is a good (quick) flick. Octavia Spencer has dramatic range, y'all.
Ok, so this one could've been a few sketches. The movie wasn't as good as the first one, but @SachaBaronCohen has still managed to lampoon enough American bullshit in 2020.

Now, go vote.
"If you love something, shoot it in the face before it becomes a flesh-eating monster."
That's enough unexplained disappearance movies for now. The Lighthouse was weird & dark; The Vanishing was confusing...but also dark. The plot and dialogue were a bit tough to follow.

Meh. The real life tale is more interesting and will save your time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flannan_Isles_Lighthouse#Disappearances_in_1900
The next month is gonna be a whole lot of Sean Connery. It's been a while, but DAMN. I'm enjoying this one.
Getting Capone for tax evasion wasn't sexy, but it put him away for good.

Sidenote: has Costner ever played a bad guy? This might be the greyest he's gotten.
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.

For most of this film, I was perplexed. For a movie that ranks as one of the greatest spy movies, it probably deserves a re-viewing. I might read the book first. Trailer:
Not my favorite Indiana Jones movie, but Last Crusade was the only one I actually saw on the big screen. So many great gif one liners, but uh, punching Nazis is always 🔥🔥🔥.
Michael Bay movies have a certain je ne sais quoi to them. Nicholas Cage plays the same character in every movie.

Thus concludes the Sean Connery movies without 007.
Ubiquitous Christmas Story entry into the thread.
Best Man Holiday ain't for the faint of heart. Ups and downs like a damn roller coaster.

(Yes, I enjoyed it, but not sure if I'll watch it on Christmas Eve next year. 🎅🏿)
Movies set during Christmas are not necessarily Christmas movies. Maybe this has some redemption themes, but...

No.

That said, In Bruges was the hit man version of a buddy cop movie. I enjoyed it. Giving me a bit of Belgian wanderlust.
My wife & I rarely finish movies in one night at home, so it was no surprise that I had thoughts during our intermission for "A Star is Born".

Me: "Hey, hon. Do you think "Always Remember Us This Way" is foreshadowing?"

Her, tonight: 🤬😢
With the long madness over, I'm still glad to see the 1940 version of Gaslight. Excellent film.

Oh, hey. It's on YouTube.
The world does not deserve you, Diana.

I can't actually tag Princess Diana of Themyscira, but in case @GalGadot is listening, you were a delight. Glad to rewatch this one. Looking forward to the rest of my trip through the DCEU.
DCEU #2: Man of Steel.

The newest iterations of DC characters could not be more different than the originals. Other than an occasional winking nod to the originals, you'd be hard pressed to find any similarities in the plots. Great fun!
DCEU #3: Batman vs. Superman.

Good action, I suppose. Plot incredibly forced. Ben Affleck as Batman: 🗑️. His Bruce Wayne was a bit more believable. Jesse Eisenberg actually disappeared into his Lex role.

This one better tie in to the next ones.
Suicide Squad is more enjoyable if you imagine Deadshot with Will Smith as Mike Lowry.

Dark ass romp with an odd mix of characters. Needs more origin story movies, but I don't know how they wrap the Diablo flick.
Graverobbing, a supervillain, and some new superheroes in the mix for Justice League. Solid.
Many Christmases ago, Pop got me Seabiscuit. He knew that I'd like it, but damned if it didn't take me over a decade to finally watch it.
Back to DCEU with Aquaman.

Hoo, boy. It's How to Train Your Dragon 2, but underwater with actors. I'm amazed they weren't sued for plagiarism by Dreamworks.

Change my mind.
Shazam!

Not just Gomer Pyle's catchphrase. My mind immediately went to its MCU corollary: Ant Man. Didn't take itself too seriously; left viewers wondering how it's gonna fit in to the larger universe.
If you can't quote the original, you're probably not going to get all of the callbacks in the sequel.
Back to DCEU.

Birds of Prey was super. The fun house fight sequence was so ridiculous and perfect for the movie.

What's next? A replay of the 🔥🔥🔥 soundtrack.
This...

This movie.

It is not good. Settle down with some beers and someone with a sense of humor. MST3K it to death.
It's been nearly a month since adding to this thread. It's an oldie, but what movie with Cary Grant is bad?

Timely coincidence: set in Tokyo for the 1964 Olympics.
