Whole timeline is #COVID19 and I'd like to see something more positive. So today I'm starting a thread - with cinemas closed I'm going to post a top moment I've had at the movies every day until they reopen (as it's something I loved pre-lockdown) #CinemaMagic
Day 1 of #CinemaMagic and it's watching The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. My dad read The Hobbit to me as a child and I loved LotR growing up. To see @JRRTolkien's world brought to life was amazing, with so much of it as I imagined
Day 2 of #CinemaMagic and it's back to the first cinema trip I remember: Who Framed Roger Rabbit. We were late and sat in the front row. Parts of it terrified me, and my parents said they'd expected a "silly cartoons film." It's probably why it made such an impression...
#CinemaMagic day 3 is #JurassicPark. It's been described as my gen's #StarWars and it's hard to disagree. Cutting edge SFX, top script ("clever girl"), pop culture impact & brill #JohnWilliams score. One of Spielberg's best. At 8yrs old, I was blown away
One of the things that still strikes me now is how well they manage the build up before you see any dinosaurs, ready for the big reveal. Great example of building tension and putting story elements in place to create multiple pay offs in the final act #CinemaMagic
Day 4 and it's the opening to The Departed that gets the vote for today's piece of #CinemaMagic. Always great to hear one of your fav songs on a soundtrack. The Stones and monologue really set the scene for the film, which had Scorsese back on form
Day 5 - I love the Mission Impossible franchise and @TomCruise somehow ups the stunt stakes in each installment. I saw Ghost Protocol in IMAX and still remember the lurch in my stomach when he steps out of the Burj Khalifa at 1:46 in this clip #CinemaMagic
Day 6 is @RealGDT's Pan's Labyrinth. The first foreign entry, it's a dark fairytale that mixes a fantasy story with the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. One of my all time favourites. It looks gorgeous, is layered with subtext and full of rich details #CinemaMagic
Special mention for @actordougjones, who is great whenever I see him in anything. His faun conveys menace and kindness (often simultaneously) and his pale man is one of the screen's most iconic creatures, despite relatively little screen time #CinemaMagic
I went to see it in a really rundown cinema in the middle of a retail park on a late showing... somehow added
to the experience! #CinemaMagic
Day 7 - picture the scene... it's the end of my stag weekend, I'm feeling hungover tired and emotional. So it's off to the cinema for Toy Story 3. Was not expecting something so emotional, this scene had me in bits! #CinemaMagic
Day 8 #CinemaMagic - not a film but a trailer. I remember the excitement of seeing the #Goldeneye teaser. I didn't even know they'd made a new #Bond and after years of watching them on TV (bank hol tradition) I couldn't wait to see one on the big screen
Day 10 of #CinemaMagic is 1996's Twister. I remember being really freaked out when I realised that the weather was something to be feared and struggled to sleep that night!
Day 11 of #CinemaMagic is Hero. I was a huge Jet Li fan and had seen his prev 3 films in the cinema. Expecting another action film, this was totally different. It's l one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, with each section of the story told with different colours
Day 12 of #CinemaMagic and it's looking back to a birthday trip to see The Life Aquatic. I love the Wes Anderson aesthetic and humour, and enjoy seeing his regular players in each film. Great soundtrack includes beautiful Portuguese #Bowie covers from Seu Jorge...
...There's always an enjoyable pettiness to the characters in his films, alongside some real pathos too, something that Bill Murray excels at.
Day 13 of #CinemaMagic is @edgarwright's Baby Driver. I've rewatched Spaced so many times at uni, and loved each of his films. This one gets the nod for its exceptional editing and soundtrack. I can't imagine another director pulling off a scene like this
Day 14 #CinemaMagic and I'm going for a @Disney classic with the original, animated Lion King. The stampede has to be one of the most brutal scenes in a kids film...
Day 15 #CinemaMagic is Sing Street - it's a perfect watch for a Sunday evening. Classic boy meets girl story, with him setting up a band and writing songs to impress her (without any musical experience). Tunes that stick in your head, a homage to the 80s, and a likeable cast
Day 16 of #CinemaMagic is The Matrix. Yes, bullet-time has been copied and parodied beyond belief, but at the time it was one of the most iconic things to happen in action cinema. I remember the excitement of buying it on video (!) when it came out
Day 17 #CinemaMagic is another foreign film with amazing martial arts - Ong Bak. It's full of stunts that I've never seen anywhere else. When star Tony Jaa has done something exceptional, they even include slo-mo replays!
Day 18 of #CinemaMagic is Batman Begins. It changed comic book films, bringing a more realistic take on the genre (as far as it goes). The Dark Knight is great, but this one sets the tone and is often overlooked
Day 19 #CinemaMagic is Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. It was everywhere the summer it came out, in part because of the Brian Adams song (which feels like the only thing top of the pops showed that year!). And, of course, Alan Rickman steals the film with his OTT sheriff
Day 20 of #CinemaMagic is The Rock, which kickstarted the unofficial Cage action trilogy, with Con Air and Face Off following. Perfect, cheesy, 90s action
And a bonus, as 20 was late.. for #CinemaMagic 21 we'll go for the opening to Spectre, which is such a cool tracking shot, with the #Bond theme slowly building up in the background
Day 22 #CinemaMagic and it's time for another animated entry. Growing up, I loved Aladdin, in large part due to Robin Williams and his genie, as well as the general sense of fun and humour
