Grab your coffee, folks, bc we're about to have a LONG thread w/an object lesson in
1) Cognitive Inflexibility
2) Conservative propaganda
3) Gender perception & attitude in conservative (esp southern conservative Evangelical) circles.
Color coding is required:
Red: me, or referring to the Vulcan.
Black: OP, or referring to the OP's wife
Green: random male commenter I don't know, but is OBVIOUSLY SBC.
Yellow: random female commenter I don't know, but is obviously Evangelical.
To quote my fav family movie:
"Everyone Acquainted?"
#TheVulcan's friend (OP) posted a list on the top-10 things that will kill you OTHER than the #COVID2019 virus.
This was my response:
There will be plenty of overlap in some of these pics, because I want to be CERTAIN I'm sharing everything in context, that I was able to remove identifying info, and that it's easy to follow.
Which is also why I'm only posting one pic per tweet right now:
By the way, I'm NOT saying everything that I said here about China is correct or accurate---I'm sharing info that I learned while I as an Evangelical:
Take a deep breath, Folx.
This is what they *really believe.*
Some overlap:
For the record, the reason why I continue conversations like this is *not* for me or the OP: it's also for anyone who might be reading.
I went in hard for this one, I admit:
He then shares a list of articles that I'm not going to link to, but will share the screenshots of his post so you can see the context of his argument, and Google them for yourself if you like:
(Random fact: I actually *love* the word "myopic". It's a key word in discovering how #ADHD impacted me & #TheVulcan, & if you remind me, I'll post an article where Gina Pera used it w/me later.)
WHOOPS, I missed the rest of my "It's not myopic OR ahistorical" point. Brb.
OH, the coward deleted my responses!!!!

Well, it's okay, I remember what I said, "It's neither myopic nor ahistorical. The mayor of Philadelphia was worried about the economy & civil liberties, & didn't cancel a parade during the 1918 Spanish Flu. Two days later, 2500 were dead.
We'll now continue w/our properly documented screenshots:
OP is a SBC seminary graduate, & ACTUALLY JUST said that his social media posts had nothing to do w/the gospel???
He shares these Instagram posts as sources, then continues:
At this point, I confess, I was mad.
Really, really angry:
(overlap)
I did bring up Picard, lol.
I almost, ALMOST thought he was starting to see the light.
But I want you to notice how he phrases this here, because it gives powerful insight into the primary cognitive problems of this sect:

(see if you can spot it before you scroll on)
He cannot, and will not, admit that he was wrong. He will not say those words.
Saying he was wrong has cognitive & theological repercussions that we NEED talk about later, but I NEED you to remember this in ALL of your discussions w/hyper-conservatives, & see this big picture.
I continue, pointing out that OP has *zero* public health qualifications, but then we have new players enter, stage left:
Notice the little hearts.
Aren't they cute?
They're from the player in yellow:
PLEASE remember that Yellow poster is a woman. :(
We believed Complementarian theology so deeply, that respect and deference were prized over life and limb:
OP then posted this page from a book, and it's important to note: OP seems to think the POOR are the ones being selfish:
Only two tweets left, but watch as the green commenter tells OP something lovely,
THEN
... tells me I make great points, but he's not going to listen to me because I'm being "disrespectful."
Seriously.
And apparently OP was "meek and mild."

The thread has now been deleted.

SO, someone play QWERTY's song & ask, "What have we learned today?"
1) Basic, human survival instincts have been SUPPLANTED by ideology.
This is Super-important to note from a public health standpoint, because a human who will not act to make sure that he and his loved ones stay *alive* is seeing the world through a HORRIBLY distorted lens.
2) An inability to admit when one is wrong is a SYMPTOM, not stubbornness.
It's not intentional, nor is it personal. It's a symptom, called cognitive inflexibility, of a cluster of brain disorders. And it's very, very fucking common.

Guess which disorder it includes?
3) This symptom, I kid you not, RESOLVES with medication.
It may take a while to find the right one.
It may take a combination of several medications, or changing up the delivery system, but, after finding the right medication, THE PERSON IS ABLE TO ADMIT THEY'RE WRONG.
I would not believe it myself if I hadn't lived with it through #TheVulcan AND #TheFirecracker.

If we had not gotten them both medicated, #TheVulcan would still be working his poverty-level job, & Firecracker would be dead.
Why?
Bc Cognitive Inflexibility is a HUGE
....contributing factor in Eating Disorders.
She didn't think anything was wrong, and wouldn't see that she was even sick.
ONLY food + medication allowed her to see that.

With #Christofacists, it's worse, because NO BAD OUTCOME will convince them their ideology is wrong.
So, if you want to dismantle the GOP's strangle-hold on the country, if you WANT to help hyper-conservatives see that acting against their own survival is bad, if you WANT to take care of the church, or #EmptyThePews of bad ones, FIRST, you have to treat #ADHD.
Seriously.
Now, I have to go get the Firecracker's medication.

FINALLY,
If you think you or a loved one has #ADHD, get this book BEFORE you approach them about it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0981548709/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_f0LDEb7RGN4FS
(By the way, it's not just any medication, it's stimulant ADHD medication. Adderall sucks for its anger side effects, but sometimes it's the best choice. Just try some of the DOZENS of other options first.)
