It’s normal to have suicidal thoughts when the world is a scary and uncertain place, like it is right now. This isolation and even lock-downs can make us feel trapped, which can trigger suicidal thoughts like a sort of flight response. Try not to judge yourself for having them.
We may not think of suicidal thoughts as normal in any circumstances, but it’s important that we recognize how rational they really are in situations that feel hopeless, out of control, and scary.
Because to pretend they are abnormal or irrational is doing a disservice to the very real work our minds do to try to solve problems and find solutions in ways that are attainable and make sense. And sometimes suicide is a solution it comes up with. And that’s okay.
My hope is not for people’s minds to ignore or forget that solution, but for there to be an array of solutions in which suicide is truly the worst, least appealing option. But in order to do that, there needs to be better solutions available.
We need to validate the fact that there aren’t a lot of great solutions right now. And that we hope we can keep choosing the option that keeps us here, keeps us connecting, keeps us living, keeps us holding on, keeps us pushing for something more, for something better.
