On a positive, had a test run of @zoom_us last night and Alhamdulillah it went really well. As much as my students were upset about the Madrasah being temporarily shut, it was nice to see them embrace this new format of teaching.
TIPS - Use screen sharing and display the Quran Sabaq, so they're focused on the screen and not elsewhere.
Use the whiteboard for explanations, I'm using it to annotate Arabic sentences... it's a little laggy but really useful and they have visual stimuli just like the classroom

If you're a female teacher reciting Quran, make sure your students are using headphones and / or are sitting in a private and quiet place away from family members.
Ask them to make a little sign for their bedroom door "in lesson".
This will help them concentrate & focus!

Try to set the same lesson time everyday and be clear.
I've set 5 pm as it's the usual Madrasah time.
This will ensure they can have some sort of a routine with school and Madrasah work.
(Keep in mind - some may have siblings who also need to use the device for their work)

When you start each lesson, ask them about their day and try to stay a little laid back than usual.
Most kids will have been home all day with their siblings and parents - this can get stressful so it's nice for them to have someone to talk to.

Don't put too much pressure on the parent and expect them to be a teacher!
Many of us maybe expecting the parents to sit with their child everyday to make sure they're working.
This alot of hard work! especially with balancing home life, kids school and personal work.

Be understanding that the parent may have other responsibilities.
When using http://zoom.us this is your time with the child, so make the most of it, teach them the lesson and set some work that they can do independently and report back to you on Class Dojo

If you're not aware of this already it's a great app / web to set work and give rewards or sanctions to your students - something to keep them motivated!
Both parents and students have an account to see the progress / feedback which is really useful.

Here are the positive skill sets and improvements that I have made. These are more tailored to Madrasah (Qur'an recitation, Surats, Duas, Arabic etc)
This also helps the child and parent to see what specific topic / thing they need to work on.

Adding to this thread couple weeks later..
2 things you should probably do before you start a class (Zoom):
- Disable the chat or set it to 'host-only'
- Disable participant annotation (when using screen share)
or else (if they figure out how to) students can scribble anywhere
