The messaging on homemade masks is SUPER mixed and I am still quite confused. However, considering the fact that various medical institutions now have released patterns, it seems that they are better for personal use than nothing, to ensure you don't infect others.

My attempt at the mask from http://makefacemasks.com : takes longer, covers the chin better, but the sides worse. You should add some wire for the nose when you make this one (cc @clancynewyork ).
