I’ve a hunch that the divide between “overreacting” to the virus and ignoring the warnings is not really across party lines or class lines or racial lines.

It’s a divide of imagination. Hear me out.
The ones not taking this seriously literally can not imagine the outcomes they’re being told are possible. They can’t imagine an event like this happening in their lifetimes.

Yes, they’re selfish and stubborn, but the lack of imagination is key.
Think of all the dullards and dipshits in your life who are waving this off. The same ones who tend to not have empathy for strangers. Lack of empathy is lack of imagination. They can’t imagine a reality outside their own.
The unimaginative are self-centered because they can’t imagine an experience outside their own. “I feel fine, I’m young, I’ve had the flu.”
So in that regard the silly celeb “Imagine” singalong makes sense, but it needs different, almost opposite lyrics.

“Imagine someone dying / Imagine it’s your mom”, etc.

The only thing that will wake up the unimaginative is graphic footage of people (who look like them) dying.
