Some facts for the MAGA crowd continually comparing the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009-10 to COVID-19 in 2019-20, even though they are different viruses.

The CDC estimates the flu kills 12,000 to 61,000 Americans per year. H1N1 is a flu. #TrumpPandemic

Here is a timeline of what happened under Obama:

Obama is inaugurated in January of 2009 amidst the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression 80 years earler. It was grim.

First H1N1 case appears in the US in late March of 2009
2/8
HHS declares a Public Health Emergency on April 26, 2009, despite only a handful of cases in the US.

Within 30 days of that first case in late March, over 1 million Americans had been tested for H1N1

Obama declares H1N1 a national emergency in October of 2009.
3/8
By the time H1N1 ran its course, over 12,000 Americans had died. The fact that Obama took early and decisive action kept H1N1 deaths at the very very low end of the flu scale of 12K to 61K per year.
4/8
The day before HHS declared the public health emergency, the Dow closed at 7749.81. A year later, in April of 2010 when H1N1 had run its course, the Dow closed at 11005.97, a gain of 42% in 13 months. So, handling H1N1 properly by being prepared did not tank the economy.
5/8
OTOH, in Coronavirus world, Trump was warned in Dec of 2019 about COVID-19 & did nothing while actively suppressing attempts to prepare. The economy is now tanking, the market is in the toilet & who knows how many hundreds of thousands will lose jobs this month & next? 20%?
6/8
In summary, despite inheriting a near Depression from the Bush economy, Obama handled H1N1 smoothly and smartly and the economy was ready to soar in 2010 like the stock market had already been doing on his watch.
7/8
While Trump has had 3 years in office and is still blindly flailing about for a response, blaming everybody else while COVID-19 numbers get exponentially worse and the economy goes into the tank.

We are now at 72,000 in 3 1/2 of Coronavirus.
