Ok what if Brendol refused to get Hux glasses, contacts, or laser eye surgery because it’s a “weakness.” Because Hux shouldn’t have a “crutch,” he should overcome such problems on his own

Kylo wonders why Hux doesn’t react when he sees his face for the first time
Why Hux will often walk right past him like he didn’t see him. Why he squints at datapads

One day Hux hands a datapad to one of Kylo’s knights, addressing them as “Kylo.” And though the knights all wear black robes and masks, Kylo knows they’re easy to differentiate between. Kylo says Hux’s name and Hux spins around, his cheeks dusted in pink, though his face stays
otherwise poised. He hands the datapad to Kylo as if he’d never mistaken them and walks away.
Another time, he mistakes one of his captains for another. Nobody corrects him. Kylo doesn’t know if they don’t do it out of fear or respect.

Sometimes, during meetings, Hux stands unusually close to the holoboard when he’s reading off a report or preposal.
For the hell of it, Kylo makes a face at Hux when they pass in the hall. Hux continues on as if Kylo never existed.

Kylo is confused. Despite how he feels about Hux, he can’t deny Hux is highly intelligent, and that his memory is as sharp as a vibroblade. Such little mistakes aren’t like him.
So Kylo comes up with a plan.
So Kylo comes up with a plan.
On a transport to Starkiller base for a routine check, when Hux has nowhere to escape to and nothing to consume his attention, Kylo purposely holds up his datapad far from Hux’s face, watches as Hux squints, and then puts the datapad back at his side.
“You saw this report I made?” He asks.
Hux nods. “Yes.”
Kylo stares. On the datapad screen are a couple lines of gibberish and numbers.

Instead he puts up his hand and four fingers, two of which are bunched together. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Hux looks up from his own datapad and glares. “Are you serious? If you’re so bored, Ren, go bother the pilot.”
Hux looks up from his own datapad and glares. “Are you serious? If you’re so bored, Ren, go bother the pilot.”
“It’s a simple question, Hux.”
“A question I’m not inclined to answer.”
Kylo looks to the cockpit door, makes sure it’s closed, and removes his mask. He turns to Hux. “You couldnt see how many I was holding up, could you?”

Hux’s head shoots up. Now Kylo has his attention. “No,” he denies. “I just don’t feel like wasting my time with your inane questions.”
“Then prove it to me. Because the way you mistake names and pretended to read a report title that was gibberish says otherwise.”
“Then prove it to me. Because the way you mistake names and pretended to read a report title that was gibberish says otherwise.”
For a second, Hux chews his inner lip and his eyebrows furrow. Kylo holds up the fingers again.
Hux glares. “Three,” he spits. “You’re holding up three.”
Kylo separates out the fingers he’d bunched together. “Four,” he corrects.

Hux’s mouth pops open, but no words come forward. Still, his eyes are brimming with barely concealed hatred and annoyance.
“Why don’t you get your eyes treated?” Kylo asks. It’s a rather simple surgery with less than a day’s recovery time.

But of course instead of the expected response, Hux’s lips pull up into a sneer. “Are you done? I have better things to worry about.”
“Better things than being able to see correctly?” Kylo asks. He can feel himself becoming agitated. “What would high command say if they knew?”

It’s enough for Hux to put his datapad to the side, and for him to rise from where he’d been sitting. He steps close to Kylo. “There is nothing wrong with my eyes, and you’d do best to stay out of my personal manners,” he seethes.

Kylo stares at the door. Delusion on /this/ high of a level isn’t like Hux. Instead of this stupid curiosity about Hux being assuaged, the fire only grows brighter.

Kylo intends to find out exactly why Hux can’t see properly, but pretends otherwise. Whether it’s simple delusion, denial, or something else. And if it means taking it from Hux’s mind, then so be it.
