I’ve been watching a lot of films during quarantine! Here’s a thread of the films I’ve watched/what I thought of them:
1. Hour of the Wolf (1968):
- very disturbing but very good film. cinematography is great
- in Swedish, so you’ll prob need subtitles
- this film/other Bergman films have inspired directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers (if you’ve seen The Lighthouse you’ll see parallels)
2. Good Will Hunting (1997)
- Mad it took me so long to see this
- Would characterize as a must-see
- Will make you emo
- Will also make you miss Robin Williams
Network (1976)
- Very relevant satire about news networks
- Very good dark comedy critique on the news broadcast industry
The Art of Self Defense (2019)
- really really liked this
- the cinematography goes HARD and the plot is really interesting/unique
- it’s accessible on hulu (as is good will hunting!)
The Lighthouse (2019)
- very good! Twas cool to see Robert Pattinson in a film like this (he was GREAT in this)
- heavily influenced by Hour of the Wolf so it’s fun to point out the parallels
La Chinoise (1967)
- cinematography was WONDERFUL
- based on Dostoevsky’s Demon; comedy about a group of Marxists that plan to kill a Russian official but things go wrong
- in French
- lost my interest a couple times throughout for a bit but to be fair I’m easily distracted
You can find La Chinoise on Kanopy, which is free for students/anyone w a library card!
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)
- prequel to the Twin Peaks series
- helpful to watch after watching Twin Peaks because it answers a lot of question
- good cinematography but I mean it’s Twin Peaks so
- prob don’t watch til you watch the series or you’ll b confused
Midsommar (2019)
- y’all know wtf goin on
- idk why I watched this before going to sleep tho hahahahahafuck
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
-great film, great cinematography, will make you emo
-cw: homophobia/transphobia/racism (for context this movie is about a cowboy that was diagnosed with AIDS)
The Master (2012)
-really interesting film if you like stuff about wwII/post wwII America but without the combat
-v unique plot and the acting is wonderful
Blade Runner (1982)
-a certified sci-fi classic
-really cool visuals
-idk I just think this is a film everyone needs to see
The Hunger (1983)
-david bowie is in this if that means anything to you
-good cinematography
-the plot is honestly pretty confusing and not super well defined in my opinion
-Criterion collection bisexuality, this film is SEXY tho i will say
Moonlight (2016)
-please for the love of god watch this
-sadly there aren’t a lot of films that discuss black masculinity and sexuality but this one does and does it beautifully
-big big recommend
The Lobster (2015)
- shit this movie is weird but it’s very good
- dystopian society film but in the most unique way possible
- unsettling ending
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
- yea if you haven’t watched by now please do???
- friggin great satire film about the cold war
- quotes that are v relevant today
Scorpio Rising (1963)
- short film; this that art school shit
- experimental film about gay nazi bikers? Nothing really gory or violent though just kinda follows their mundane activities for the most part
- arguably a lengthy music video
I have films to contine this thread with but do people read these?? Lmk
